Inspired by the Lube thread!

OK so it really has nothing to do with lube.

Some of the people on the thread feel like they have to preface everything they say with "Of course, that's only my personal experience." I have felt this way a lot. Not just here, but in real life too. It irritates me that people get offended so easily sometimes.

How about you? Do you have to deal with this issue?

Discuss, argue, flame...

Go for it!

I don't think it's offense so much as a disagreement.

If you state something that is true for YOU but in a way that implies it's true for everyone, someone's going to point out the difference.

Does it irk you to have to clarify? Do you have to do it a lot?

I think I get more irked because I forget to add the word "some". I think I'm one of those people that others think I saying my opinion are fact. I don't give a damn if they do, just saying though. lol

Exactly.

For example, saying, "Lube is only necessary for anal sex" could reasonably - I think - be taken as a blanket statement applying to everyone.

It's common sense really. Take into account where u are first, this place is complete with personal opinion everywhere.

Assuming that something is an opinion is common sense? lol

That explains so much about the state of journalism - not to mention common sense, itself - in the world today.

i agree with Pantha. Do we really need to say with every post that it is an opinion? Are we protecting people's sensibilities?

Posting in a public forum where personal opinion is called for, then yes it is common sense to assume that personal opinions are at hand wink

I'm not saying that, at all. But when someone writes, "Lube is only necessary for anal sex," I think it's understandable if someone would take it as a statement of fact, rather than opinion.

Especially if the party of the second part does not know the writer as someone who dresses opinions as facts. shrug

It doesn't bother me at all. I just don't clarify, unless I realize I've been unclear. If I feel that I've stated what I meant to say, then I'm good to go. I could give a flying fuck whether someone else gets their panties in a bunch because they assume I'm speaking for all mankind or some shit.

I'm the same. Only occasionally will I state that it's only my opinion or whatever.

Good, thanks. You?

Re the topic, I automatically say 'I think' a lot of the time, and occasionally will say 'imo' or something, but I don't worry too much about it. I'll sometimes clarify later if someone misunderstands.

I used to feel I had to clarify but it got annoying so I said duck it. People will assume regardless. Clarified or not, minds are already made up so I just say it.

See, I think it's implied that you can only be speaking from your personal experience and people shouldn't get their Pampers all in a twist 'cause you don't qualify every sentence with the obvious. You'll find that doesn't concern them when you're agreeing with them anyways. lol

I don't feel like I need to clarify myself to random ppl, whether it be on the net or face-to-face, especially on the net. I didn't come here to make friends. I came to learn wat I can about Prince, then I discovered the site has more to it than just Prince, so I join in and participate in discussion at times. I make my point and leave it at that. When ppl get unecessarily all hot and bothered by it, I just laugh "it's just the internet and I don't even know yo ass anyway". Depending on the statement made though and how I'm approached, I clarify myself to that orger.
I swear the words "HATER" is wayyy over-rated...smh
