Absolutely - I firmly believe that having had a full life with four legs, a three-legged one will not be the same. Not for them, and not for me. It's an owner's responsibility to make sure the pet doesn't suffer, and that includes making the right decision for the pet and not for the owner. twocents

Well, if humans can live long, full, fruitful lives as amputees I have no reason to believe that an animal can't too. When the vet mentioned amputation yesterday I cried. Then he told me that it's humans that have the hangup about amputation not the dog. And the more I thought about it, I realized he's absolutely right.

So, I think that I'ma advocate for the amputation if the surgeon says that it will cost $2000 and he'll still be in pain and risk re-injury at some point down the line. thumbs up!

I understand your point of view but I don't share it - I believe that there's way too much "keeping your pet alive by any means necessary" going on - medication, amputation, kemotherapy, wheelchairs (!?!?!?!?) and that stuff... I believe fiercely in our responsibility to NOT keep the pet alive as much as to keep it alive. That's all. smile

I just got a new rescue puppy yesterday and he may have to get one of his front legs amputated. sigh We go to the orthopedic surgeon on Thursday to see what he says. pray

My Aunt adopted a Chihuahua that they thought had a broken leg. Turned out that it was a old wound that was not addressed properly. They had to amputate. She runs around and carries on just the her other dogs. It is amazing how well they adapt.
I hope your pup does not have to go through that though.

You know I've been looking for a 3 legged dog right?

Poor little pigeon. They do seem to adapt though.

Cowboy is the cutest lil thing EVER. mushy His owner gave him up yesterday cuz she'd already spent $2500 on him when he initially broke his leg last year. When he reinjured it this weekend she decided to give him up to us. She cried the whole time we spoke on the phone and when I went to pick him up. bawl

That poor little bird! I remember one time when I was vacationing in Florida. There was a seagull on the beach that had netting stuck to its leg. sad And a few other times, I have seen seagulls in Florida that are hopping around on one leg, because the other foot is injured.

when the master was a kid he'd catch pigeons for his family to eat, frogs too. Times were tough, and it didn't taste too bad he said!

What we need is universal health care for American wildlife!

They get it in Canada. They get it in France and Sweden.

That an American squirrel cannot count on the provision of universal health care in the 21st century is a travesty!

nod My rescue, Cowboy, has a splint on his leg now so he can't use the leg at all. He's been ripping and running in the backyard like it ain't nuthin. mushy My Marley did the same thing when he broke his leg. Cowboy goes to the orthopedic surgeon tomorrow and we'll know then how to proceed. But I've already got a family that owns a farm that want to adopt Cowboy regardless of the outcome. The lady was a vet tech and when I described the situation, she said it would prolly be best to amputate. The best part is that she wants him anyway. woot!
