They get caught in human shit and that's why they sometimes lose toes or legs. If you ask me, they could go live in the woods where there is no shit like that... but they are rats on wings. shrug That said, people should stop fucking throwing things on the ground like their mamas are working cleaning the street.

My Aunt adopted a Chihuahua that they thought had a broken leg. Turned out that it was a old wound that was not addressed properly. They had to amputate. She runs around and carries on just the her other dogs. It is amazing how well they adapt.
I hope your pup does not have to go through that though.

Is that how it happens? I always thought maybe there were vicious bird fights lol I always wondered how that one with the 2 stumps survived! I guess it helps that he has wings but he could never really perch anywhere sad

nod I was in Petsmart today and the trainer had a 3 legged dog and she said that after they learn to balance themselves they are just fine. And I've seen many 3 legged dogs that do just fine. Sandra Bullock has a 3 legged and a 2 legged dog. mushy

One of mine broke the same leg as this rescue years ago and would run like a fool on 3 legs. Ironically, both my Marley and this rescue came from the same breeder whom I now know is a puppy mill. They both have brittle bones cuz of this bitch. hammer Marley's having surgery tomorrow on his hip for the 2nd time, again a congenital problem due to this greedy breeder. If I ever see that bitch I might fuck her up. bitchfight

I've been told that's how it happens, they might get caught in string/lines misplaced by humans, or trying to squeeze in and out of those little places in buildings and stuff they sleep in. I guess the pigeon you saw sorta leaned against something, or found something to lie down on. They make do, animals are amazing like that. I don't believe in amputating a dog's or a cat's leg to save its life though, I don't care how well they seem to manage. I just don't believe in doing it, I wouldn't do it to Uzie, Mim or Mini. shrug

It is a damn shame these damn puppy mills still exist. Some regular breeders are not any better. Some of them are just in it for the money.

Absolutely - I firmly believe that having had a full life with four legs, a three-legged one will not be the same. Not for them, and not for me. It's an owner's responsibility to make sure the pet doesn't suffer, and that includes making the right decision for the pet and not for the owner. twocents

This was my husband feeding the geese a couple of years ago.
A couple of months after that, my kids brought home a baby bird that got kicked out of his nest and they demanded I save it. I found a bird rescue place and when we dropped off the baby bird, guess who was ther? Nubby.

Well, if humans can live long, full, fruitful lives as amputees I have no reason to believe that an animal can't too. When the vet mentioned amputation yesterday I cried. Then he told me that it's humans that have the hangup about amputation not the dog. And the more I thought about it, I realized he's absolutely right.

So, I think that I'ma advocate for the amputation if the surgeon says that surgery will cost $2000 and he'll still be in pain and risk re-injury at some point down the line. thumbs up!

My experience working directly with a wide variety of domestic and wild animals has proven time and time again that amputation of a limb (and in some cases 2) does not hinder their quality of life and does not cause pain and suffering.
