When I was a kid and spending summers at my grandparents' house in SoCal, at least one time during my stay, my grandfather would take my sister and I to Farrells for breakfast.

giggle

Farrells was this huge ice cream parlor on Beach Blvd (I think) so we'd have HUGE ice cream sundaes for breakfast.

I am also known, on occassion, to have cake for breakfast.

That ice cream place sounded like a lot of fun! I wonder if it's still around?

essentially fermented soybeans
you buy it at japanese food stores
it has a very special aroma, which turns off certain people
with a spoon or chopsticks you pour in some soy sauce and green onions.
you mix until it gets very sticky then you put ontop of rice..and enjoy

Ottensen

Sometimes I eat a traditional japanese breakfast, which is very filling but completely opposite(or considerd odd) to western standards in terms of palate, fat, and calorie count. It consists of the following:

smoked salmon, trout, or mackerel
miso soup with wakame seaweed
tiny bowl of brown rice
picked vegetables(usually carrots, cucumbers, cabbage, or okra w/hijiki seaweed)
small pot of green tea

or I start the day mith miso soup w/ tofu, or a clear Japanese root vegetable soup that has carrot, tarro root, lotus root slices, shiritaki noodles and/or konyakku inside.

It sounds fairly exotic, but once you become familiar with the ingredients it's all pretty easy to make.
