Identity Theft - Have you experienced this?

just curious because recently someone used my credit card info to make $3,000 worth of purchases in the NY area

i had been there on vacation and used my card at numerous shops and then the next month, charges started appearing that were not mine

but unfortunately i did not check my statements for several months, since i was not using my card anymore

anyone experience this crap before? how can i find out if someone is actually stealing my identity in NY?

thanks

Well if you believe or know that someone is using your CC,then you should get ahold of your Cc company, and let them know about the situation, and then you might want to alk to the police.

Ahh...well I have not expereinced this myself, but I do know that most CC companies have that identity theft protection. I had it on 2 of my CC,and whenever anyone looked into my credit history, such as companies if I was applying for another card, they would send me notices about it. That might be something that you would be interested in getting. I got rid of mine, cause I wasn't carring them with me anymore,so there was no worry of theft. smile

I do this for a living, recovering identities. What you've experienced is not identity theft. It's fraud, or credit card fraud to be specific. Someone stealing your card number, your bank account info, etc. is not identity theft. It's similar to someone stealing money out of your wallet.

It would be ID theft if that person had created a credit card in your name, with your social, and charged 3,000 to it. You are left with the bill, the blemish on your report and all the hassle of trying to deal with clearing it up.

I would suggest checking one of your free credit reports. You can do this at annualcreditreport.com- don't provide a credit card, your report is free. You get one free report from each of the three bureaus. You can get them all at once, but I'd recommend checking just one bureau every four months. It will offer the opportunity to check your credit score for a fee, but you do not have to do that.

You will also see a link at the top of that web site for a Fraud Alert. Go ahead and file a fraud alert on your account. This is not 100 percent effective, mind you, but it doesn't hurt to have it in effect. (A fraud alert will place a notice on your credit bureau files that you request to be contacted before any line of credit is established. Unfortunately, if a company is just looking at your score and not your bureau reports- it's not effective. Also, many companies have just gone around the alert and ignored it. However, it does work in some cases and when you've been a victim- it's worth your time.)

I won't make this a sales pitch by recommending the company I work for, but I hope these tips help you or anyone else dropping by this thread.

If someone asks you for your name, address, ssn, birthdate etc on one form be very careful.
