Ex-Falcons Jamal Anderson Was Snorting Coke Off Toilet Bowl Genius at work:
Police: Ex-Falcons Jamal Anderson Was Snorting Coke Off Toilet Bowl Sunday, February 8, 2009 – updated: 6:14 am EST February 9, 2009 ATLANTA -- Former Atlanta Falcons running back Jamal Anderson was arrested Sunday morning on suspicion of having suspected powder cocaine in his possession, Atlanta police said. The incident occurred at the Peachtree Tavern in Atlanta’s Buckhead community. Atlanta police spokesman Otis Redmond said an off-duty officer working security at the nightclub alerted police. Police said that Anderson was caught snorting cocaine in a bathroom stall. The arresting officer said he saw Anderson and another man snorting the drug off the toilet bowl. Authorities said they also found a suspected marijuana cigarette in Anderson’s pocket. Investigators said Anderson was accompanied by Mark Hudson, who was also arrested. Both men were taken to Fulton County jail. Anderson was charged with possession of cocaine and marijuana. He has a court date set for 11 a.m. Monday. Anderson is perhaps best known for the celebratory "Dirty Bird" dance he and other players did after touchdowns. Anderson helped the Atlanta Falcons go to the Super Bowl in 1998. The Falcons lost to the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl that season. Former Falcons coach Dan Reeves told WSB-TV Channel 2 that he was disappointed by Anderson's arrest. Anderson left the team in 2001 after hurting his knee and later became an NFL analyst for ESPN. When asked about Anderson's arrest, ESPN e-mailed WSB-TV Channel 2 the following statement: "We just learned of this situation, and it is not appropriate for us to comment until we have more information."

Hasn't everyone done a little off the rim coke sniffing at some point in their lives?
Just kidding! | |

Urine residue adds a certain je ne sais quoi to the drip. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Terry Glenn got arrested for drug possession and running around nekkid in a hotel last week here in Dallas. It's really hard for these guys to cope when they can't play anymore. [Edited 2/9/09 8:15am]

Reminds me of Richard Pryor's classic bit on cocaine;
"Coke? Not on no coke, you can't get hooked....I've been snorting 15 years, I ain't hooked!"

Not to defend these former jocks' bad behavior, but considering that they played in such a violent sport, and that most of these players have life spans significantly shorter than the average person, I'm not surprised that some of these players are into cocaine, heroin, painkillers, or alcohol; in many cases, it's to deaden the effects of their injuries that they are suffering from post-football. There have been a number of players who have died from drug overdoes and/or committed suicide just a few years after playing in the NFL, and an autopsy of their brains revealed significant brain damage and scarring. Considering that many of these players suffered from depression and psychosis after their careers were over, and that their motor function skills were lacking in some areas, they probably needed the hard drugs just to function. For years the NFL and the NFL Players Association had been covering up these statistics, and they are now just coming to light. As a side note, I caught the end of the Pro Bowl yesterday while waiting for the Grammys to come on, and one of the reporters was interviewing Rhonde Barber, a defensive back who played for the NFC in the Pro Bowl. Rhonde Barber is the identical twin brother of Tiki Barber, who was the star running back for the New York Giants until a couple of years ago, when he retired from football and went into broadcasting with NBC. One of the analysts commented how Rhonde Barber looked at least two years older than his brother Tiki, even though they were identical twins. So it's obvious that the game of football will have some ravaging effects on the body.

So it's obvious that the game of football will have some ravaging effects on the body. I think MOST of these guys have all kinds of non-football related emotional issues that are often masked by the success they have on the field. These issues are probably amplified by the cummulative brain damage from playing. When the game is gone and they have to deal with themselves they have no idea how to cope with the underlying issues. I think the NFLPA needs to do a better job of providing counseling during and after their playing careers. I don't think it's a coincidence that you see less of this dysfunctional behavior in the NBA which is not as much head to head contact. They got their issues but this level of brain damage and suicide isn't one of 'em.
