What Were Your Favorite Moments Of The Holiday As A Child?

What did you look forward to as a child when the holiday was approaching?

I always loved the holiday specials on television, as IceNine mentioned on another thread.

I looked forward to seeing Santa come up the driveway in his sleigh. My mom and dad always had "Santa" show up that way for as long as I can remember, well, up until I found out that it was my dad's best friend... after I found him kissing my mom's best friend in the bathroom... That was traumatizing...eek

Dressing up in pretty holiday dresses always made me smile... the shopping for the "perfect" holiday dress and then the anticipation of being able to actually wear it.

The presents! I would shake them and bug everyone to tell me what was underneath the wrapping paper. Years later I would carefully unwrap each gift, play with them, and then wrap them back up. When Christmas finally came I was bored. sad

The pie, the candy, the cookies!

Picking out a tree and decorating it. I think that was really my favorite part... well, that and the presents. smile

I always liked it when I came out to the kitchen in the morning and "Santa" had eaten the cookies my parents left out! smile It made me really believe he had been there!

Definately picking out the tree and decorating it. We used to decorate our front veranda too, with lights and fake snow. lol

My mother would always cook a special dinner on Christmas Eve...Marinated Portuguese Chuck Roast, with marinated baked potatoes, macaroni and potato salad - Holy's Bakery (the BEST bakery on the island) Apple Pie.

Watching A Charlie Brown Christmas, Frosty the Snowman, and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Ah, yes, I remember it well...

Great post, AzureStar - brought back some nice memories.

I always found it quite amusing that there were presents under the tree BEFORE Santa got there... like WEEKS before he got there.

Just what the fuck was Santa's job? The presents were already under the damned tree, so I guess his job was to take his fat ass to everyone's house, eat the cookies and milk, fuck the cat and shit the bowl up before moving to the next house.

sad cry

My parents did the Santa route..they would never put the presents out beofere Xmas eve but only when we were sleeping because santa delivered on Christmas eve when we were asleep. Ma would put out coco and cookies on the table for him before we went to bed. On the radio you would hear bogus reports of Santa and his sleigh being spotted by radar and we'd believe it. Then we would fall asleep and wake up like at 4 in the morning from excitement and start our electric oven while ma and dad were asleep..we'd bring all the presents to see who's name was on each one by the electric oven light etc. I cannot believe I am going to say "those were the days".

damn, the Good Times thread, santa thread, now this. what next , Davey n Goliath to realy break me down?

Decorating the tree was always my favorite. (And of course, the X-mas TV specials!)

And waking up X-mas morning and getting my brother and parents up to open presents. And I always got to play Santa in the morning and pass out all the presents. And my kitty always got a stocking filled with cat toys too. biggrin

The weirdest custom I ever heard of is that a town near mine always had Santa tour the neighborhoods on a fire truck a few days before X-mas. He didn't bring presents or anything, they would just drive a fire truck around and Santa was perched on the back waving at all the kids. So bizarre...

lol... I messed up and did that very thing two years ago with my kids... I had them all out and under the tree and my son asked me abot it. My parents "tried" to save the presents from "Santa" until Christmas morning... you reminded me of something though...

lol... I remember one year I wanted this kitchen set SO bad. I got up and came downstairs... NOTHING! Absolutely nothing under there from "Santa". I was so crushed and went back to bed, thinking I had been a terrible little girl and he didn't get me anything. Later, I came down stairs... and in front of the tree was a stove, refrigerator and sink... with all of the little food things that go with it. I was the happiest five year old around! I have many pictures of me and that kitchen set.

Another year, something similar happened. Again, nothing from Santa. We went to my aunt's for the dinner and that's when I walked in on "Santa" sucking the lips off of my mom's friend. I was so sad. I get home... and there was an organ sitting in the dinning room... again, I was sooo happy.

I think my parents got off on torturing me.

I got an electric keyboard. And one year I got something called an Omni-chord, which was a bizarre electronic keyboard-type thing that played chords and had a few recorded-type drum tracks. It was weird. I wanted a guitar and my Dad had 2 and wouldn't let me play them. evil So, I got the weird Omni-chord-thing instead.

sigh oh well...

beyond that, I loved knowing that by Christmas morning I'd ALWAYS have some new Star Wars toys, and if I was lucky, some new Underoos. smile

I loved the holidays and have some very precious memories of holidays spent with my parents & grandparents. the family was ALWAYS together, grandmother cooked 4 two days, all home made foods. carollers would come by, an as a youngin santa actually came 2 my house, and THAT scared the S*** out of me, (it was a relative or friend) so I'd run and hide in my bedroom. didnt come out till he was gone! the best part was opening ALL the presents and getting all dressed up for midnight mass and pictures with our gifts. but better than that was putting up the tree/decorations a few weeks prior, and every day i would lie under the tree and stare at all the beautiful lights & ornaments and daydream. it was a real tree too. so the smell of the pine was delicious. carols played on the stereo, and EVERY xmas eve we'd all pack the car and go look at decorations around the city. (b4 church) hopefully it would b snowing. the scene then was complete. xmas shopping was FUN too, and i just loved the animated figures in the store windows, but sometimes it was too cold 2 stand there and stare at the magical scene. i was always allowed a small amount of drambuie to drink with the family toast at dinner. (just for the holiday) i wish i could go back sometimes, when times like these were so simple, worry free, filled with love. to b hugged by my family right now would b bliss. even tho i raised my own family with equal traditions, and love, it was NEVER the same without my parents/grandparents. never the same! but the memories will last FOREVER.
May the BELLS ring 4 U even when ur not in love. hug kisses

I loved going Christmas shopping, and looking at all of the wonderful displays.

Baking cookies with my Mom, and sisters.

And the best part of Christmas was friends and family visiting, eating, drinking, laughing, playing games..Just happiness galore.

Being happy doesn't mean that everything is perfect, it means you've decided to look beyond the imperfections... unknown
