Bingo!

I do both. And guess what? from time to time I also go to the bathroom. confused

It's a game, that has to do with pretending to play guitar. And I think this game is very good for kids because it helps them develop rhythm and coordination in a fun way.

There is a sign outside the music store near where i live. It reads "Hero's play real guitars".

That would bug the hell out of me. If I make a sign that says "Heroes learn how to spell," would you give it to them for me? lol

Anyway, I play both a real guitar and Guitar Hero/Rock Band. It's not the same. Most people who don't "get" those games have never played them with a group of friends. Bottom line: it's fun (with or without alcohol).

...but it's a lot funnier with some drink involved... lol

They tested Joe Perry & Slash on Guitar Hero since they're in the game, and they said that it takes two completely different mindsets to play a real guitar vs a video game. Both couldn't hack the game. Their fingering & hand/eye coordination was off. I think some people are just naturally gifted when it comes to music, and others no matter how hard they try, just won't get it. Same with those video game whizzes.....like that 16 year old who the "ultimate" guitar hero.

16 year old kid drops out of high school to play Guitar Hero professionally. I do think that's taking it too far. I read the article, and the parents come off as stage parents, pushing him for endorsements & crap. I mean, winning huge prizes and $1,000 checks for winning at Guitar Hero is great (I admire his skills), but not worth dropping out of high school.

Dave Navarro had the same problem with GH. He says that the game has his solo way off... he complained to the company and they told him that they were programmers not musicians... oddly cute smile

I think playing these games is actually pretty similar to playing an instrument, only much more simple. You hit the button at the right time in the right way and it makes the right sound.

I think the reason the pros weren't as good as on their instruments is that GH & Rock Band require you to read music, not just play it!

I have a friend who we call the doctor, he can play ANYTHING on the guitar and it sounds epic.
He needs to play guitar hero and tell us what he thinks, and that will end the debate nod

someone posted something on my birthday thread that looked like a game, with coloured dots on frets, it looked WAY harder than playing the guitar for real confused if anything, hand eye co-ordination is gonna benefit, perhaps nothing to do with music, but need it be?

I'm not trying to defend it or anything, since I'm actually from the same school of thought as you, why not learn to play guitar instead confuse

but, I know so many kids that get a guitar, their parents pay for it, and lessons too if they have any sense, and it's not as exciting as they thought it would be, in fact it's HARD WORK. So they give it up. Guitar Hero is for kids like that. The ones that were gonna be musicians, LIKE the hard work and have a different mindset, so I don't think this will be a detriment to future Mark Knopflers or Eddie Hazels lol

God, I hope not. lol

But I can't help but wonder how many people are out there really getting hardcore into the game who've never even picked up the real thing. What if there's a Hendrix somewhere who's unaware of his potential because he's poking buttons all day?

Seems a fun game. And that's all it is. What's your next question... what's the point scoring a 3 pointer in a NBA video game? It's for fun especially with multiple people. You know what maybe Matty don't like it because he sucks ass at it and can't get past medium. lol

Because it's against the law and you'd get put in prison.

Last time I checked you didn't get that from playing a REAL instrument.

I think the point is that you're still talking about a game. Just because someone carjacks someone in a game doesn't mean they want to do it in real life. Same as with 'GH'. Just because someone enjoys simulated guitar game, doesn't mean they actually want to learn how to play a real one.

that's very true. It's no more playing music than a shooter game is like killing someone (and it doesn't claim to be).

But just like aiming & shooting, some of the techniques in guitar hero are similar to ones that are used in non-dork world.

I guess the point is being able to read and play.....everything is so condensed nowadays. shrug

maybe with GH they are just playing. However, truly reading music could be difficult for some especially those not born with that ability or who started learning later in life.

Overlapping skills is a bytch! shrug

It depends on cases. If it stimulates kid's creativity and makes them want to learn to play the instrument seriously, why not?

Yet it's a shame when it turns adults into lazy guitar player wannabes.
Is there any place of refuge one can flee from this insanity

my word such a kerfuffle over a game lol
The OP answered his own question at the very beginning by saying he wasnt a gamer... people dont especially go out and buy the console just to play guitar hero they buy other games to play hence being called "gamers" I think the people he is refering to are called "musicians"
As a guitar hero player myself and a novice guitar player i cant help but wonder at what level of playin ability the people who are being snobby about GH are at?
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
