I'm going natural, any hair tips?

Okay, So I've decided I'm done burning and cooking my hair for good. I'm sick of the split ends and the trimming and the trimming, I've lost too much hair. I've got a bit past shoulder lenght but it used to be longer than that. I'm kinda disappointed over it. I love my hair. I'm going to ease into a natural style that I'm probably gonna wear through college and probably for the rest of my life.
My hair is very thin and, to be honest, VERY WIMPY.
So what should I do?! I've convinced my dad (He always made me go get my hair done at salons, and I swear one lady ruined my hair, i don't go to her no more) that I don't want to but a lot of heat on it anymore, and he agreed, but I'm still in a situation where I have to blow dry. Can't really let it dry on its own. I'm always in and out and doing things. So is there any way to blow dry it out w/o totally slaughtering it? And I'm gonna go to college on the east coast more than likely *crosses fingers*, in some cold as hell places, so I don't wanna be strutting around in the snow with wet hair like an asshole.
But I might stay in Cali or go to Georgia or Texas, which is a hell of a lot warmer.

So, Help me out girls!

How can I keep my hair looking good and healthy now?

I have worn my hair natural for the last 2 and a half years. Take very good care of your hair or you will have some of the same problems you have with it being chemically treated.

nod Condition condition condition!

use protein conditioners once a month for strength and elasticity, it'll help build body too.

I recommend the old school 2 step Aphogee (its good for ALL types of hair) that suffer with breakage from too much heat/chemicals. You HAVE to use this type of conditioner with heat- it smells like shit, so get ready- you can do this at home.
and a second moisturizing conditioner... maybe a lighter one that will not weigh your hair down.

orgnote me on color issues.... we can discuss over the phone if you like heart

remember- a good shampoo and conditioning/ healthy scalp is a great foundation for a health head of hair. Any shampoo/conditioner residue will cause itchyness and breakage from too much scratching, and poor brushes that are wrong for your hair can do the same.

Hair is at its weakest point when wet, so try to detangle BEFORE you wet it then wash and keep it tangle free while combing while rinsing.
You'll lose less hair that way.

Hair cuticles begin to melt and break down at 135 degrees so don't use a blow dryer that's too hot because it will weaken the hair shaft.

orgnote me for a full consult.... hug

I worked in Olive Lee Benson's salon for 4 years... she invented the creme relaxer. She was THE SHIT! Groundbreaking muthafuckka had ALL her clients hair down their backs, ALL her clients were women of color... no matter how tight the nap of hair was, the hair grew. 1/2 " per month... guaranteed.

Your hair looks to be fine, its how you wrap it. Ricans invented that, did you know you are NOT supposed to wrap the hair in the same direction or it will break?

Opposite ways, switch nightly, it prevents stress in specific spots. The type brush is IMPORTANT! Brushes must stay clean (sounds silly but black hair is VERY delicate and once you get a dry patch of scalp from bacteria -dandruff is contagious and it leads to psoriasis (bald spots) or alopecia.

The longer your hair gets (pass the shoulder or at shoulder length then you will want to switch to sleeping on a satin pillow case and STOP wrapping the hair. A scrunchy loosely tied will do.

Good stuff!!!

By the way, the last pic you saw of me was not my hair. lol

That was a wig. I've been rocking an afro for over 2 years now.

Your post helps tons though. I am not taking as good of care of my hair as I should.

Olive's recipe for long hair on a sista...

1. a good relaxer
2. tons of conditioning
3. rollersets ONLY then blown out for a sleek look
4. monthly protein conditioning

that's it.... never use a no-lye conditioner

always remember that any fake hair is coated in formaldehyde, and that chemical seeps into the hair strands as you wear braids or weaves causing the haier to dry too much = breakage

weaves and braids weigh hair down too much causes stress on follicles esp. around edge of scalp causing permanent hair loss. So be careful not to wear braid too tight, they should never hurt.

medicines can cause hair loss too... lol

Question: Is there a benefit to regularly clipping the ends of hair? I know it doesn't make hair grow faster as some say, but is there some long-term benefit to clipping besides just helping a hairstyle keep a fresh look?

thrimmed ends reduce snags in hair and the hair wears better. It'll also give the hair a healthier over all look (no white frayed tips)

the more you trim the better the hairstyle looks. All hair grows at about a rate of about 1/2" per month, roughly six inches per year. Men and pregnant women grow hair out faster because of the higher volume of blood (more keratin to produce hair + nail cells) in the body.

nod I think diabetics for example have too much yeast in the scalp and lose hair and the medicines thin out hair.

Oh and BTW, bitch, you look fine as hell in any hairstyle! I love natural looks, try organic coconut (cooking) oil as a moisturizer for your hair (and skin) , that stuff works wonders! Just use a little. Old school rememedy that has yet to be improved upon.
