Tattoos on the hands - yay or nay?

Thinking about it, can't think of anywhere I'd want one except maybe on my left hand. Bad idea?

Not my taste, but if you dig it go for it.

Well, that's the thing, I'm not sure. It'd be pretty prominent all the time, so I'm wondering if I'd regret it, but I don't want to get one and just hide it away. Decisions...

That is the thing about tatt's on the hands...you can't cover them should you feel the desire to.

Other places allow more flexibility. Tatt's on the arm can be covered by sleeves etc...they don't necessarily end up hidden away all the time, just when you want.

I have one on my hand.
I think if you love it, has meaning, and it's not anything really big it can work.
If you plan on doing anything for a living where it might get in the way I'd think about it carefully. Like if you're going to Law School or something executive, where people might (fairly or unfairly) pass you up for a job because of tats.

I have a very double-standard opinion on visible tat's on men vs women. redface

I don't think I have the arms to have it in the classic top of the arm position. Where else, top of the back? Don't fancy it. Definitely not getting one on my legs - not massively hairy but I don't think that's best. lol I like the idea of having it on my hand the same way I like wearing simple string bracelets on my other arm. I'd like to be able to see it. That's not really explaining it though. lol

I need to give this some serious thought.

It'd be the Japanese character in my sig, probably about 2cms in size, on my left hand.

I'm unlikely to be getting an office job or anything like that anytime soon. lol

Yes but anytime soon is irrelevant. If you decide to get one 10 years from now, it will still be there.

I was a makeup artist and now a painter. Neither job it's an issue for me.
If I was trying to be something else, it might have been.

Hand tattoos aren't something everyone can pull off well, but if you think you can, go for it!

My only concern would be work. Do you have a job where inky hands might be considered a problem?

I really want to get a little peace symbol on my right hand, but have held off because of fear of rejection from potential employers. (as if a tinky bit o' ink could interfere with my ability to do my job... rolleyes )

What image/design are you thinking of?

Yea. I'd say put it somewhere an employer can't see it.

Not that it ACTUALLY makes a difference one way or another, but enough people still have negative ideas about tattoos that there's no point challenging that. Employers have stupid ideas about appearance and unfortunately so do some of their clients.

Depends on you mate, i am up to 9 now all of which i can hide if i need to, am pretty sure govt presentations go better WITHOUT visible tats. I have been having some ideas about some new ones and left hand is one place i have been thinking of.
Tats for me are really just that, for me but it is different for everyone. If this is your first tat i would suggest that you think of one that is discreet and then if you are still stoked have a visible one.

how about a UV one otherwise they are ment to fade over 12months so they then cant be seen except under UV light

in my opinion i wouldnt recommend a tattoo on your hand not only could it cause problems with jobs and stuff, once you get older and your hands going wrinkled its not going to look so amazing

shrug Everything wrinkles. You live long enough, none of your tattoos are going to look stellar anymore.

A woman (in her late 50s) at the college my husband works at asked him (her boss) if she could get an eyebrow ring. He checked with HR if there were any rules, and after some discussion she was told to go for it eek
Nobody could believe it!!! She works in reception and greet customers all day. Though being a school and customers are young, it's possible that would be seen a positive and progressive thing hmmm
She was delighted and I think it looks very becoming on her nod

I've some bleedy tattoos on old folks, that you can't even tell what they are meant to be any more hmmm does that happen to all tattoos or are there just better techniques/inks/equipment now?

Thanks for all the input. My parents are pretty conservative about things like this, so that too would be a factor, even as a 27 year old adult. lol But I've decided, if I'm having it, that's where it'll be. It's just about having it or not. Maybe I can get a pic of my hand and put the character over the top and see how it looks. hmmm

The chances of me ever having a job where this could be a problem are very, very slim if I'm still living in Thailand.

And for anyone who missed it, the tat would be the symbol 'Hikari' (meaning 'light') in my sig. Bit fammy, but it's more than just that.
