Man, painted. eek

I have hair that tends to break off in the same spots every winter. Do you have any idea why that is?

hmmm you don't wrap your hair.....if its natural.

it HAS to be diet/medicines. Where is the hair loss? is it breakage (short pieces of hair chipping away) or long (unnatural hair shedding) ?

One spot on each side and two in the back. My hair loss along the back of my neck may be due to alopecia because I have PCOS. I was happy that I finally had some length and now it's gone again. sigh

OH... I must add, the best help is to have a proper evaluation done in person by a trained cosmetologist that used professional products. A good stylist can help you plan a perfect regimen for you (since every head is different) to help you achieve the best results possible. heart

You will need to talk to your Dr. about your meds. and team up with a stylist to come to a good regimen. Its hard to evaluate with out me messing up your hair myself. batting eyes

I also should add, the meds have a certain chemical, a hairdresser should be able to help with neutralizing what ever is causing the alopecia. Hair loss is co complicated it is so hard to figure it out in some cases, but do not worry, you situation sounds very fixable. You may need to switch to meds, or switch to specific hair products that will promote hair growth.

What does your hair look like when you dont blowdry it?

Curly or straight? What color?

I have very long blonde curly hair and I never blowdry it as that would totally split the ends. My hair needs 3 hours to dry thats why I always take showers in the evening and let it dry overnight. (If it's still wet in the morning I know I didn't get enough sleep-that happens quite often in my shift-work-job, but thats another story).

I put shampoo-conditioner in and afterwards a conditioner mask in the ends, but if your hair is thin and not that long that might be too much conditioner for you.

I have worn my hair natural for the last 2 and a half years. Take very good care of your hair or you will have some of the same problems you have with it being chemically treated.

nod Condition condition condition!

use protein conditioners once a month for strength and elasticity, it'll help build body too.

I recommend the old school 2 step Aphogee (its good for ALL types of hair) that suffer with breakage from too much heat/chemicals. You HAVE to use this type of conditioner with heat- it smells like shit, so get ready- you can do this at home.
and a second moisturizing conditioner... maybe a lighter one that will not weigh your hair down.

orgnote me on color issues.... we can discuss over the phone if you like heart

remember- a good shampoo and conditioning/ healthy scalp is a great foundation for a health head of hair. Any shampoo/conditioner residue will cause itchyness and breakage from too much scratching, and poor brushes that are wrong for your hair can do the same.

Hair is at its weakest point when wet, so try to detangle BEFORE you wet it then wash and keep it tangle free while combing while rinsing.
You'll lose less hair that way.

Hair cuticles begin to melt and break down at 135 degrees so don't use a blow dryer that's too hot because it will weaken the hair shaft.

orgnote me for a full consult.... hug
What's that?

I have been natural since the sixth grade, but I've always kept my hair in cornrows until about 3 years ago when I almost exclusively pressed my hair. I've just recently (almost a year) been trying to wear it all natural so I'm kind of in the same boat as you are tora. Painted has given very good advice, especially about the conditioning and clipping ends.

I don't know if any of this was mentioned b/c I didn't read the whole thread yet, but I would also suggest going to this website http://motowngirl.com It has very good advice and product reviews. Also visit the natural hair care section of Fotki b/c there are a lot ppl on there documenting their natural hair progress with good advice on techniques, products, and hair styles. Motown Girl has a spotlight every week and they sometimes link to their Fotki page, so that can make it easier to browse Fotki.

And if you can afford it, try to find a good natural hair beautician to help you with hair care and teach you some good techniques. There are some professionals out there who claim to know how to take care of natural hair and they have no clue and they will jack ur hair up in a minute, even if they are good in general.

Lastly, be prepared for bad hair days! Because, until you really get a handle on how to take care of your hair there will be some days when ur hair flat out refuses to do what you want it to. Hold your head high no matter what!

whew Hope that helps biggrin

thumbs up! thanks for the link, good looking out!

I press and curl myself. I use cooking oil (coconut) as a moisturizer and my hair is like silk, but I still use professional shampoos and conditioners and hairspray/gloss when I need extra control for a special event.

That Aphogee stuff is the best hair re-builder I've tried. Many new versions have come since, but none is better than the original. It stinks though.

it is a pure protein conditioner, it mends hair and adds body and elasticity.
makes your hair shinier than glass. You will need to do a deep moisturizer after. Great for any type of damage.

If you don't have one of those bonnet dryers, should you just put a cap on your head and use a hand hair dryer?

Never use a cap for a protein conditioner. That one you work in your head and you can use a regular blow dryer w/ diffuser attachment and dry until the hair is crispy and hard lol then you rinse and then do a deep moisturizing conditioner with a cap under a bonnet dryer.

you can use a cap and blowdryer w/ a moisturizing conditioner I suppose. I use a heating cap for the moisturizing conditioner.
