Phelps apologizes for drug use (CNN) -- Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps admitted to "regrettable" behavior Sunday and vowed it wouldn't happen again after a British newspaper published a photograph of the swimmer smoking a marijuana pipe.
"I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way," swimmer Michael Phelps said in a statement released Sunday. "I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment," the record-setting American athlete said in a statement issued Sunday. "I'm 23 years old, and despite the successes I have had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner that people have come to expect from me," Phelps said. "For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public -- it will not happen again." This statement, co-authored with his publicist, was a last-minute replacement for Phelps' original choice: "Yeah, I smoked some pot. Big fuckin' whoop!" |

I think that was ALL authored by his publicist. Not a word of it sounds like it really came from Phelps's mouth. 
I know he's gotta worry about his image (and the multimillions that brings in), but this seems really silly. So he smoked some pot. No big deal. | |

I just think it's trippy that a celeb can't so much as take a shit w/o someone trying to get a pic of it. Oy...
