Groundhog Day... what's the deal? I just heard a quick mention on the radio that today was Groundhog Day.
Is it just me or is this NOT as big a deal as it used to be? I remember when I was a kid, it was kind of hyped almost like a real "holiday" or something. Or some kind of significant event. Or did we only pay attention to it because we were kids? Is it still something that's still geared toward kids? Or did this actually used to be a bigger topic of conversation in the grown-up world than it seems to be now? | |

I've wondered about that myself....maybe it's a kid thing.
On another note, I think maybe that damn groundhog saw his shadow today, which means six more weeks of winter here.

Imbolc (Candlemas)
one of the four principle festivals of the Irish calendar.. celebratd by some gaelic and other celtic cultures either at the beginning of February or at the first local sign of spring...most commonly it is celebrated on February 2, which falls halfway between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox(northern hemisphere) Imbolc is traditionally a time of weather prognostication(prediction,divination) and the old tradition of watching to see if serpents or badgers come out of their winter dens... like the american Groundhog day... if the groundhog comes out and sees its shadow,it goes back in and 6 more weeks of winter if it doesn't see its shadow..spring is coming early(?)

It was always a big deal to us but I'm from Pennsylvania...I still check out what Pawxatawney Phil does every year.
