Fuck the Smithsonian. Most of its museums are full of crusty junk and old crap you find in people's attics. The Hirshhorn and the Freer/Sackler Galleries are the only ones I like. I worked for an SI museum for 3+ years...the Smithsonian is a bureaucratic, bloated, incompetent organization that, like most Federal programs, wastes taxpayer money by being woefully inefficient. The museum I worked for also misrepresented their financial status to potential sponsors, too. Support your local museums instead, they probably won't waste as much of your donation.

The Smithsonian Institution is a collection of museums that are the national museums of the US. There are two in New York City, all the others are in the metro DC area. Most of them receive approximately 70-75% of their annual funding from the US Congress (ie. your tax dollars, that's why the ones in DC don't charge admission).
