I see where not only has Phelps been suspended for three months from the US Swim team (which means they won't pay him for these three months, either and yes - they get paid), Kellogg has decided not to renew their $5 million deal with Phelps.

Someone here said Phelps being a dopehead wouldn't cost him anything, but I guess they were wrong.

Thank you! So he smoked weed - big fucking deal. When will this country wake up and legalize it already? Besides, which causes more harm - weed, tobacco or alcohol?

Tobacco, and I think tobacco should be outlawed.

It's not really the weed issue people are killin' this cat over, it's about the fact that he was DUMB ENOUGH to do the shit in plain view WHILE he had MILLIONS in endorsements to lose. And let's keep it real, all you weeders here, you know GAHT-DAMN-WELL you wouldn't be tokin' this shit in the company of others while yo ass had millions of dollars in endorsements! lol

Whoopi makes a great point: He's being EXPECTED to be perfect, he's being PAID to be an athlete. They're 2 different things.

But he knew the scrutiny of being a high profile athlete, so it's still all on him. He knew he'd be under scrutiny like this, it comes with millions.

(CNN) -- Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps admitted to "regrettable" behavior Sunday and vowed it wouldn't happen again after a British newspaper published a photograph of the swimmer smoking a marijuana pipe.

"I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way," swimmer Michael Phelps said in a statement released Sunday.

"I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment," the record-setting American athlete said in a statement issued Sunday.

"I'm 23 years old, and despite the successes I have had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner that people have come to expect from me," Phelps said. "For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public -- it will not happen again."

This statement, co-authored with his publicist, was a last-minute replacement for Phelps' original choice:

"Yeah, I smoked some pot. Big fuckin' whoop!"

this is some ridiculous shit, especially considering that the mother of all destructive drugs - alcohol - is legal

...so in other words, if they treat him like other drug users who are rotting in jail, you'd be cool with it? I mean, if its cool to pillory him because someone released a picture of him toking a bong, then why not just throw him in jail? Let's dispense with the psuedo moral outrage, shall we? Kids are going without basic services and a decent education in S.C., but Phelps toking on a bong is somehow more important to the growth of children....

No, I'm saying that he was paid $$$millions by companies to tell us what we should buy or use, and with that contract comes an implicit (or, I bet, explicit) trust.

Phelps broke the law. He lost our trust. What should his punishment be? I don't know or care. But I do know this:

I'm not buying anything he says I should. He's not trustworthy.

And please understand this: I'm not indicting him for smoking dope, even though I think it's a stupid thing to do.

I'm PISSED at him for breaking the law, and I'm REALLY PISSED at his "apology". It was total bullshit. It was an apology for getting CAUGHT smoking dope, NOT for smoking dope in the first place.

I admire his accomplishments, and I know he's done some nice things, and I hope he has success in the future.

But I don't trust him any more, so I have no interest in products he wants to pitch.

I understand where you're coming from completely...my neice is an accomplished swimmer in Louisiana...and she's a huge Phelps fan...but I'm hoping that my sister taught her daughter to understand the difference between being a fan and being influenced by the behavior of a fallible human being...and that really is my point...he screwed himself by acting like an idiot, but I was using several of the products he endorses WAY before he became a spokesperson for them...and being a person who has NEVER based my buying decisions by who endorses them, it's no skin off of my nose that he stands to lose out on millions of endorsement dollars....

We all know weed is no big deal, and he could probably win a gold medal while high. But it is illegal.

His mistake was breaking the law and getting caught. He's a spokesman, america's sweetheart, and those are the ridiculous standards they hold you up to at kelloggs lol They don't want a spokesman & role model for kids who "does illegal drugs"

That's why rock stars aren't on Wheaties boxes. They get to take drugs, but no endorsements save for D'addario.

Silly or not, it's illegal.
