The South Carolina DA is "considering" filing charges...sounds to me like they're looking for some TV time...

What could they possibly charge him with? lol

'Possession of what might be an illegal substance - because we don't really know since all we have is video of him smoking a bong which may or may not have marijuana in it?' lol

Actually, not even a video - a pic!!

One of the people there said Phelps was out of control from the minute he arrived. Who knows what other statements the police might have?

And yes - this would be done mainly for a politician to make a name for himself, but who gave said politician this opportunity?

So hearsay is enough to charge someone for possession of an illegal substance?

again, maybe he was and maybe he wasn't....my problem with this is that the incident took place 3 months ago...and all of a sudden NOW its an issue...I could see if the picture was of him standing in front of a truckload of dope in the parking lot of some elementary school in S.C. ....that would be big news to me....but him "maybe" out of control at a party 3 months ago with a bong that he "may" have been smoking weed out of.... whistling not so much...

it was a dumb move on his part, but this whole brouhaha reeks of celebrity bashing....

Here's another question I bet advertisers and others are asking themselves:

If Phelps used this drug, what other drugs might he have used?

The last thing (besides getting arrested) Phelps needs is people wondering if he did steroids.

I know you don't smoke dope. How would you feel if your son was a big Phelps fan and then saw him smoking dope? Do you think seeing one of his heros smoking dope might make him think smoking dope is OK?

How would you feel about that?

Ooops, sorry - that was meant for Erin. But I'd like your thoughts too, Rene.

I used to do it back in the day....and I've told both of my kids about my misadventures and about the pitfalls of doing drugs...it isn't Michael Phelps' job to influence my kids either way....that's MY job...and if I'm up on my job (which I am) Michael Phelps and any other celeb won't have that kind of influence on them...does that mean my kids won't experiment with weed....or even use for a time? Absolutely not..but I've taught them well enough to accept responsibility for their own choices, so I can confindently say that if they do use, they won't use the "I saw it in a movie" excuse....

If my son looks at his 'heroes' for guidance or he makes a decision as to whether something is right or wrong from a celeb...I'm failing as a parent and that's the bigger issue to me.

Phelps better hope that his advertisers and sponsors feel the same way, but then again - isn't making decisions on stuff based on endorsements from celebrities what marketing is all about?

Yes it is but not all of us are zombies following blindly.

And like I said, this incident will not hurt him in any way. Even if some sponsors bail on him, I guarantee others will be right there itching to cut him a deal.

Federation lauds Phelps' apology

-----
Associated Press

LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- Swimming's governing body praised Olympic champion Michael Phelps on Wednesday for his public apology after being photographed inhaling from a marijuana pipe.

"As a citizen, Michael Phelps displayed inappropriate behavior," FINA said in a statement. "But his sincere regret and the promise that such a situation will not happen again are sufficient guarantees that this great star will continue generating respect and appreciation to all fans of our sport around the globe."

The 23-year-old Phelps apologized to fans and sponsors this week after the British tabloid News of the World published a picture taken during a November house party at the University of South Carolina appeared to show the swimmer smoking pot.

Swim wear company Speedo and several of Phelps' other sponsors have said they also accept his apology and will stand by him. Phelps won a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics last summer.

Not gonna hurt him in the long run. He smoked a very common drug, and it wasn't performance enhancing, so it's not like he was pumping roids to win a race.

Where it does hurt him somewhat is the squeaky clean image he tried to mold these last few years will be impossible to maintain. lol
