By Karen Youso, Star Tribune Last update: June 22, 2007 - 3:53 PM Karen Youso Q What happens to amputated limbs? A After the limb is amputated, it is taken to the hospital's pathology lab. It is kept in a freezer there until it is collected for cremation and proper disposal, according to pathologist assistant Kristin Giesen at Hennepin County Medical Center. Patients can also choose to have the limb sent to a funeral home for cremation or burial. Hospitals can only release body parts to a funeral home. but what about all those ummm - like ahhhh other cut out human parts pieces

but what about all those ummm - like ahhhh other cut out human parts pieces I would think the same as it is all clinical waste My 1st Clinical research job was in a hospital. They did not have a facility on site to incinerate hazardous waste. The same company that picked up and disposed of "red container" items such as needles would also collect anything that could not be "recycled" and incinerate.

WELL ? think about all the things the hospitals cut away ... W T F do they do with all that stuff ? I'm sure someone already answered this but the parts are identified and cremated and stored at the mortuary. At least that is how it was handled when I worked at Fairhaven I had to work on a property audit and part of the audit was to identify and verify that all the amputated parts (fingers, hands, arms, legs, feet, toes) were in fact in the mausoleum attic as we had recorded. I think you can bury it but not sure if you're obligated in any way. I think it just becomes property of the state. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740
