Newsflash psycho - just 6 kids make a huge family these days. Not 14. Depression BEFORE the kids? Watch her in a couple years, it's like I said earlier in this thread - I wish some media would revisit in a while and see how many children she's getting to keep. I certainly hope Children's Services will see the family on a regular basis to keep up with shit.

California Medical Board probes octuplet birth

LOS ANGELES – The fertility doctor who helped a California woman have 14 children, including octuplets born last month, is now facing a state investigation on top of harsh criticism from medical ethicists.

The Medical Board of California did not identify the doctor who helped Nadya Suleman, 33, of Whittier, become pregnant with the six boys and two girls born on Jan. 26., even though she already had six other children.

"We're looking into the matter to see if we can substantiate if there was a violation of the standard of care," board spokeswoman Candis Cohen said Friday.

Suleman, a divorced single mother, told NBC's "Today" show that the same fertility specialist provided in vitro fertilization for all 14 children.

In the interview broadcast Friday, Suleman also said six embryos were implanted for each of her pregnancies. In her latest, two of Suleman's embryos split, resulting in two sets of twins among the octuplets.

When asked why so many embryos were implanted, Suleman said: "Those are my children, and that's what was available and I used them. So, I took a risk. It's a gamble. It always is."

Doctors say the norm is to implant two or three embryos, at most, in women Suleman's age.

"The revelation about one center treating her makes the treatment even harder to understand," said Arthur Caplan, bioethics chairman at the University of Pennsylvania. "They went ahead when she had six kids, knowing that she was a single mom ... and put embryos into her anyway."

Suleman's infants were born prematurely and are expected to remain in the hospital for several more weeks. Her six other children are between ages 2 and 7.

Suleman said she had never been on welfare and would find a way to get by with the help of family, friends and her church. She said she planned to return to school in the fall.

"All I wanted was children. I wanted to be a mom. That's all I ever wanted in my life," Suleman said in the portion of the interview that aired Friday. "I love my children."

She said she struggled for seven years before finally giving birth to her first child.

According to state documents, Suleman told a doctor she had three miscarriages. Another doctor disputed that number, saying she had two ectopic pregnancies, a dangerous condition in which a fertilized egg implants somewhere other than in the uterus.

The state documents describe Suleman becoming pregnant with her first child after a 1999 injury during a riot at a state mental hospital where she worked. Suleman feared she would lose the child and sunk into an intense depression, according to a psychological evaluation in her workers' compensation case.

"When you have a history of miscarriages, you think it will take a miracle," she told Dr. Dennis Nehamen. "I just wanted to die. I suspected I was pregnant but I thought, 'That's ridiculous.'"

But the 2001 birth of the baby "helped my spirits," Suleman said.

More than 300 pages of documents were disclosed to The Associated Press following a public records request to the state Division of Workers' Compensation. Among other things, they reveal that Suleman collected more than $165,000 in disability payments between 2002 and 2008 for the work injury, which she said left her in near-constant pain and helped end her marriage.

It sounds like her pre-baby (certainly, her pre-octoplets) body involved a really bad back. I'm not sure how much working out she'll be doing.

Hopefully she takes it easy - no matter how much money she is offered!

It's just wrong to me - unless they're multi-millionaires there's no way they'll be able to support the children either so they're depending on government financial support... just cause they could. Providing for your children is THE most important thing there is, and they knew they'd be getting (at least) 7. shake

That's what I was thinking. How are they going to afford this?

I just read in the paper that the mother is unemployed and already has 6 other kids at home. Apparently, she recently filed for bankruptcy (not surprisingly). disbelief

This woman's mother says that her daughter is "obsessed with children" (obviously). It's okay to like children (who doesn't?). But before you become artificially inseminated, you better make damn sure you can afford to financially support the kids, once they are born. I hate to say this, but I think this woman has some kind of mental illness going on. Anyone in their right mind would not go through 9 months of pregnancy (carrying 8 babies) knowing that they cannot afford them. disbelief Does she think that money grows on trees???? This woman is worse than the clown car family; at least they have a way of earning income, and they seem to be able to support themselves financially. This woman does not even have a job, and lives at home with her mom. WTH????? disbelief

i agree. she and the doctor should be in prison. WTF person would say 'oh yes, crazy person. i will inseminate you with 8 children. that is a splendid idea.' mad

I also forgot to add Delusional, to the list too. And I agree, the doctor who inseminated her needs to have his license revoked and should face charges too. THis whole story makes NO sense...how in the freakin hot hell did she get away with getting 8 embryos implanted in her---a single woman with no job, no home of her own, no means of income, she filed for bankruptcy a year or so ago and lives in her parents 3-bedroom house. OUTRAGEOUS!!!eek Who in their right mind would decide to implant those embryos in her? Whoever it was obviously isnt in their right mind mad I saw a part of her interview on the Today show this morning, not by choice, I just happend to have it on as I was getting ready this morning...she said she only wanted ONE more child in addition to her 6 kids...so she had 6 embryos implanted and they all took and I guess one of them split into twins but...

I DONT BUY THAT! If she only wanted ONE more child, why get implanted with SIX embryos? Yeah, that makes alot of sense. This whole thing is shady and stinks to high heaven. Theres something more to this story--but right now all I have is more questions than answers mad eek eek
[Edited 2/6/09 8:09am]

It should have been 3 embryos maximum.

Women undoergoing in vitro usually get two implants per try, 3 if it's a severly barren woman with a history of miscarriages.

Disturbed yes.

"Disgusting", for having some sort of mental disorder? That's not the adjective I'd use in this case.

A disgrace...well that's relative, I guess.

Well I think what she did is clearly disgusting AND disgraceful. You dont get yourself implanted with multiple embryos, so you can have 8 more babies in addition to the 6 kids you already have eek Especially when you have no job, no income, no proper kind of home for all these kids and no kind of financial support. She's made having babies into some kind of sick hobby of hers, collecting them as if they were beanie babies! disbelief Yes she is mentally ill, but mentally ill or not, I still find her and her actions to be disgusting --her insane selfishness and her incredible delusion thinking that she's a great mom. And that she's also trying to capitalize on this craziness and her babies by hiring a publicist and trying to score book and TV deals ill And how this all went down is a disgrace because this lady should have been stopped a long time ago, but I also believe there are others to blame for this travesty as well. That she was never told "NO" is reprehensible and I have to ask, did her family or parents ever seek help for her? Did they realize that she wasnt well and that she needed professional psychiatric help? This whole mess is wrong on so many levels and the tragic thing is it all could have been prevented before it came to this sad

Octuplets' grandmother criticizes daughter
2 hours ago

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The mother of the woman who used a fertility doctor to give birth to octuplets, despite already having six young children, called her daughter's actions "unconscionable" in an interview posted online.
Angela Suleman is caring for the six older children while her daughter is hospitalized after giving birth Jan. 26 to the octuplets.

"She already has six beautiful children, why would she do this?" Angela Suleman said in the videotaped interview with celebrity news Web site RadarOnline.com. "I'm struggling to look after her six. We had to put in bunk beds, feed them in shifts and there's children's clothing piled all over the house."

The Web site posted photographs Sunday from inside Angela Suleman's disheveled three-bedroom home, where Nadya and her brood also live. Heaps of clothing pour from an open closet door and a carpeted bedroom, where a bedsheet serves as a curtain, is cluttered with cribs.

Nadya Suleman's publicist Mike Furtney said that his client has been away for nearly two months, so shouldn't be held responsible for the home's current condition.

Furtney said his client planned to move into a larger home once the octuplets were healthy enough to leave doctors' care.
He declined to comment on any of the remarks Angela Suleman made about her daughter in the interview.

"Those are very personal issues between a mother and a daughter," he said.
Angela Suleman said Nadya's boyfriend was the biological father of all 14 children, but that she refused to marry him.
"He was in love with her and wanted to marry her," she said. "But Nadya wanted to have children on her own."

Nadya Suleman, a divorced single mother, told NBC's "Today" show that the same fertility specialist provided in-vitro fertilization for all 14 of her children.
Angela Suleman seemed to contradict that account, saying the fertility specialist who helped her daughter give birth to the octuplets was a different doctor from the one who aided in the birth of her first six children.

Angela Suleman said she and her husband pleaded with Nadya's first fertility doctor not to treat their daughter again, so Nadya found another doctor to work with.
"I'm really angry about that," Angela Suleman said of the doctor's decision to perform the procedure.
A Medical Board of California spokeswoman said Friday that it was investigating the doctor — who has not been identified — to see if there was a "violation of the standard of care." The spokeswoman did not elaborate on the nature of the potential violations.

Angela Suleman also challenged her daughter's remarks in the NBC interview that she always wanted a large family to make up for the loneliness she felt as an only child.
"We raised her in a loving family and her father always spoiled her," Angela said.

I truly believe this woman is mentally disturbed more than anything else.

There is such a disorder where women are obsessed with being pregnant, and particularly, with newborns. The more that comes out about this woman, the more I see someone that clearly needed (and still needs) to be under a psychiatrist's care, not a fertility specialist.

Whoever treated her seriously needs to be thorougly investigated and have his license revoked, stat.

Yes, more stringent rules need to be put in place when it comes to IVF in the states. I realise that dr's prey on desperate or ill ppl. I think there are many ppl responsible for this situation.
I hope this cures her need for being pregnant and having babies.
For her kids sake and for her parents sake.

And yet everyone is going to flourish and not question that this woman should have her kids yanked from her care. She is mentally ill and I won't argue whether or not she can control her behaviors but she probably won't get treated for this ridiculous bullshit and she will be validated and compensated. It's really sickening.
