His response:

Hey Erin, I am sorry you are going through this. I will talk to them again. I do want both of you to be happy. I know what its like to live in each unit and you hear a little but it was never this bad. I will do what I can and assure that I will be fair in this, but there is only so much I can do.

Keep me posted if it gets better, worse or the same.

Thanks

sigh

Is it possible that there are no isolation sheets under the wooden floors in their unit?

Sure, that's probably it but that's not my problem to fix.

$900/month!?!? Screw noise! You can't get an apartment without chalk outlines, razor wire and a few poltergeists for THAT price in Toronto! lol If your neighbors split, put in a good word for me!

I think you've been smart here, Erin. Even if your landlord does nothing -- and I trust he'll at least speak to your neighbors -- you've put your concern in writing. Questions: Are they your only neighbors, or are there others in your building? Might the others corroborate your complaints and vouch for your good behavior?

Paying $900 in rent with no utilities included by myself while raising a child alone is not easy.

My place is no dump either, I was lucky to find it. You just have to not mind things like women being found dead in the park across the street.

Have you talked to the neighbors about this? Maybe before you call the police, a good sit-down might go a long way. At least, you could tell the cops you tried that, because I bet you they're going to ask you if you did.

No, because they will not answer their door and only acknowledge my existence when they are telling me off. Like I said. They are miserable people.

Calling the police will be the very last resort. I don't like to waste tax payer money for calls like that. If it doesn't get better I will probably write a note and tape it to their door as a next step.

I'd love to know if it's the husband or the wife doing it...or both.

I'd really like to punch both of them in the face.

Maybe the landlord can arrange a meeting. Most problems can be solved through communication, and that's a whole lot more fun than having police come over. Anyway, good luck.

I agree with face to face talks but really, its not like there is any kind of agreement we can come to. There isn't anything different for me to do as I am not doing anything wrong here. What can I bring to the table to make them happy?

"Ok, so here is what I can do for you. I will no longer talk in my apartment, or watch tv. I will duct tape my son's mouth so he can not make a sound as well. I will no longer come home any time after 6pm as this annoys you. I will no longer vacuum or clean my apartment as even day time hours are not ok to do anything that makes any noise louder than a whisper"

Man, I really wish this was a big joke and I am exaggerating about all this. I'm so not. neutral

Just arrange a meeting at the office with the parties in question. That way everybody (manager, the odd couple and U) can talk about it and no one won't feel defenseless. Compromise and come up with a solution. Maybe they want the attention. Old folks really feel that way. Who knows...U may come 2 like each other. And if that don't work, steal their walkers! Shit!

There is no office. My landlord lives in Calgary. lol This is a duplex, not an apartment building.

There is nothing for me to compromise on here. And I've tried to be nice to them from day one and they have never been nice. That's fine, I'll still be respectful to them even though I don't get it back.

I understand. hmmm Not that you should have to for any reason, but have you ever thought about moving to save yourself these sorts of headaches? Or is $900 for the caliber of apartment you have an unusually good deal where your are?

The only way I would move would be if I buy a house and I'm not quite in that position yet.

$900 is amazing for this place. It's 3 bedrooms - about 1200sq feet, with a fully fenced back yard. I am surrounded by 4 parks and there is a beach about a 5 minute walk from my doorstep and yacht club just down the road. Plus I was able to paint and decorate it any way I wanted so I think my place looks amazing. The landlord used to live here actually so it's also really structurally sound - new windows, great heating system, etc. At least my landlord is no slumlord. I'm totally happy - other than the people harassing me for basically just living here.

Some pictures of my neighbourhood. It's beautiful especially considering it's right in the city.

A conservation area full of wildlife right behind the bike path directly across the street from my house.

sigh

I don't want to leave.
