I'm a recovered hoarder.
I inherited hoarding from my parents. Now I'm an anti-hoarder, I still have stuff, but I'm getting rid of things and not collecting more stuff and am a selective buyer, I buy only what I need or absolutely want. Now when my mom isn't looking, I might throw away some useless stuff. The other day, I went through the freezer and just threw out some stuff that 'could have' still been good but I know deep down in my heart that will probably sit there for another few years. Out with the bad, better health for me.

And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack And you may find yourself in another part of the world And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful Wife And you may ask yourself-well...how did I get here? And you may ask yourself How do I work this? And you may ask yourself Where is that large automobile? And you may tell yourself This is not my beautiful house! And you may tell yourself This is not my beautiful wife!

It's amazing how much stuff you THINK you need when you're collecting it all & you just can't see this mountain of shit while it's happening. Or maybe you see it but it doesn't bug you until you have to move it around, then you wonder why you have it at all!
I've been clearing out for a few months now. There's 2 huge garbage bags full of clothes waiting to go to a charity/shelter - they could have done someone some good this winter, instead they're just blocking my closet door... waiting for me to get off my anus CLEAR THE CLUTTER

My shower and toilet will be broken down and rebuild soon, so I started to tackle the rest as well and started to chuck stuff not touched for over a year. OMG! I HAVE SO MUCH STUFF! Just the kitchen alone; I use like four glasses, tops and I have about 30! So I am making SPACE! I love space! I am going to try and be as minimalistic as I can get! if only I could help out I like nothing better than decluttering

once you're donated and thrown everything out you'll feel so clean and relaxed. it's great to clear out your house. keep it up! only if you aren't a genuine certified hoarder, in which case you would feel horrible and anxious and edgy and irritable

I think that causes hoarding because I can see the effects on my dad, and how he treats food, and his mom used to have a lot of canned goods all the time. This was her way of surviving through war before, not only that though, they were sort of poor back in the late 40's to 50's. So now they tend to 'stock up'. I recently had to throw away 5 cans of refried beans (expired years ago).

but they werent getting thrown out/donated Same here. And magazines. But I started with the mags. Most are GONE now and I feel BETTER. Once I started calculating how much money I spent on those mags... I decided to let go off one of those addictions. Books. I only keep the books that are good enough to re-read. Books that made an impression. The rest GOES to the second hand shop.

Me to! Yes, me too. A clear space helps my mind. I still have more de-cluttering to do in my room though. I had tons of books which were all over my room and found a solution since I wasn't able to get rid of them yet, I put all those books in boxes and used them to make a sort of sitting space, it's covered with comforters and cushions and is quite comfy.

Although personally I hate canned food (I've noticed it makes me a little ill), It would be okay to have all those canned goods for emergencies, but the thing is to rotate the stock, use the older ones first and place the newer ones towards the back so that your stock is always fresh.

Same here. But it's kinda telling my house looks like an pensioner collected his whole life. It's ALL got to GO! I've been doing that myself, it's been sort of going slowly. But I've gotten rid of a lot of stuff in the past year, and still want to get rid of more. If I could rid of everything too, I would be happy. Once I just took a couple of boxes outside and started going through them throwing things in the garbage, even letters, but stopped once I saw that I was throwing away letter from my sisters. I've decided to go through them again and keep only the ones that are meaningful, but some of the others are gonna go in the trash. The letters from childhood friends are gone though. I want to end up with just the essentials, eventually.
