How did you know...

that what you do for a living is what you wanted to do? Was it just the logical decision because of the talents, and skills you already had or was it just something that you stumbled upon, and became really good at?

I've known since I was a little girl that I wanted to help people. At first I wanted to be a lawyer but now, I work to protect people's life savings. I probably will go to law school though after I graduate college next year.

I've known all my life that accounting/bookkeeping would be for me.. I LOVE math and excelled in it all through school... if I ever became a teacher, it would also be in the math field.. (Accounting, Algebra.. I LOVE all that stuff)

I've always been creative. Acting/Writing/Painting
I was a makeup artist for some years. About 7 years ago I began painting full time. I think I would just wither and die if I wasn't able to create on a daily basis. It's all I know.

What I wanted to do has changed over my adult life. I wanted to be a journalist and I did that for a while. And though it was very exciting and I was able to travel and meet celebrities, I got sick of it after a while. I needed stability.

I love working in healthcare, so I knew this was the field for me. However, I prefer the administrative side of things, so I now work in Health Administration lol I feel this is a perfect fit for me because I love helping people, but I also love being a boss smile Some people don't like to work in an office type setting, but I love it. I love having paperwork, conference calls, deadlines and staff meetings.

It's something that I stumbled upon. I was working as a Massage Therapist in a Physical Therapy office and then began working as an admin asst for the therapist and one thing lead to another. Weird, how life happens that way.

Smooches;)

Classmated used to tell me I should be a signwriter lol then later they said a record sleeve designer. Close!
I've designed quite a few CD sleeves.
When I chose the univerisity course I wanted to do, there was only one option for me, I never even read the description for anything else.
When computers became the tool for graphic designers instead of rapidographs, bromides and yokens, I was woot!
it was everything I wanted it to be, and my hands could stay clean too boxed

I have fallen backassward into every career I've ever had. I've been good at every single one of them...but wouldn't necessarily call any of them "my life's calling."

Even though I make my living as a writer...I've never though of myself as a writer. As a matter of fact, I took the bare minimum of English and writing classes in high school and college. It was never something I saw myself doing.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Thank god! lol I thought I was the only one. I keep thinking,I was never one of those kids that said "When I grow up I want to be ....". The jo I have now I have because I was already doing it,and then I found out I could be paid for doing it. lol

The reason I asked the question is because I need to start looking into a new career,so that I am perpared when I no longer have my current job,but I honestly do not have a clue to what I would be really good at. And that really bothers me. err

I'm a teacher. I used to "play school" with my dolls. I'd line them up in rows behind shoe boxes as desks, I used to make little worksheets, and I had a small blackboard that my Mom bought me. biggrin

I haven't always known I wanted to be a nurse, but ever since I became an adult I've known I wanted to be in a job where I can help/nurture people. That has ultimately led me to nursing. I have always been a science/medicine geek I read medical books for fun. boxed Although I chose nursing mostly based on my interests money and job security factored in as well.

A few years ago I took a career and life planning course (from a local non-profit for working women). It wasn't the end-all be-all of helping me choose my life's work but it was a nice way to take an inventory of my interests and remind me what I'm good at and help match those up to professions. You may be able to find something near you that helps in that regard.

As for me, I just fell into something that's hard for me to get out of. I am paid fairly well (especially well for not being a college graduate) and have decent benefits and starting over in any other line of work means losing a LOT of what I already have. So I stay working where I do cause I like the people I work with, the person I work for, the overall company and it's not a horrible way to spend my day. My work doesn't define who I am as a person the way it does if you're doing something you LOVE, but that's OK with me. Someone's gotta do the "boring" stuff.

I'd say it's the former....I fought for a long time against my natural way with people. I got stuck doing labor related jobs, and one day, I went into sales. I used to be very shy as a kid, but became extremely outgoing in my teens.

My current career is something I just fell into. I love it, but it definitely wasn't the result of careful planning or an inherent skill set. In fact, it wasn't until I was almost 30 that I even begun to take any of it seriously.

i am at uni at the moment doing a Geography degree, why i have no idea it isnt something i enjoy much but i had no idea what to do so going to uni seemed like the best idea, i have one more year of that before i have to decide i think i have rounded it down to 3 options

1. become a teacher - dont particularly like kids but its a garunteeded job
2. convert it to a law degree - takes 2 years and i have been intrested in law and was tempted to do a law degree but i really dont fancy being sat at a desk doing enviromental law
3. take another degree - this is probably the option i most like the sound of i would be able to take a degree in movie effects which is something i would love to do, i love films and making things but then my family think this is stupid as there arent many jobs in this area

so when i work out the answer to this question i will let you all know.....oh and if anyone has any suggestions let me know lol

Well, I just started on my path of what I really wanted to do. As a child I wanted to be a lawyer, that's all I would ever talk about. But then I had kids, and did the Mommy/wife thing. (which being a Mommy is an AWESOME job) Now that my kids are older, and my life has changed, I decided to go back to school and work towards my degree in legal studies, so that maybe one day I will be a paralegal. biggrin

I have thought of trying to find someone that does that. Maybe they can pry out of me what I was put here to do.

I think that the military bug bit me in 9th grade...we had a career day and a Naval Aviator addressed my class...dude looked sharp as hell in his dress whites....I briefly entertained the idea of going to the Naval Academy, but when he said that you had to be brilliant in every subject that I completely hated, I was like "fuck off!!"

....but the only job I've ever really enjoyed and thrived in has been the military...and after 16 years (this February), I've achieved my two main goals...I became an EO advisor and achieved the rank of master sergeant faster than the majority of my peers...

I knew the second that I stepped into the operating room that what I was learning what where I was supposed to be. Medicine is probably the most fulfilling occupation that one can have. I wouldn't trade it for anything!!!

It was both for me. I am a lawyer. I started law school thinking I wanted to do something else with it than I do now, but after finishing it I basically stumbled across what I have been doing and enjoying very much for about 7 years already. I am very happy with my job and plan on doing it for quite some time more. smile

I get a huge satisfaction from providing info to services that are not known about. I used to find social services for my friends who were pregnant when we were in highschool.

I could never have my dream job because being a professional Racing car Driver has to have massive finacial backing up front as well as talent! stab
Luckily I'm pretty adaptable, so whatever I end up doing I try and do it in the best possible way.

No I haven't! My Go Kart is probably, scale to scale, faster than those cars anyway! I had to start going to the Gym to get my fitness up so I can finish a 10 lap race at a decent pace! rolleyes
