The bad news is that because the foreign object was in there for a week, the blood supply in that area was cut off, resulting in an infection. The area is so infected that the vet had difficulty stitching tha cat back up, but I know that he did his best. The cat's health status is now "guarded", and the vet said he will call me back later on today with an update. I just pray that Reebok (my cat) is able to overcome this infection, but I'm not sure what will happen. He is 9 years of age, which is considered a "senior" cat.
I appreciate your thoughts and prayers, and request that you continue to pray for a full recovery for Reebok. People always talk about the power of prayer, and I'm hoping that a lot of prayers and positive thoughts will pull him through this ordeal.

Glad to hear the surgery went well
Just a couple of questions; Do you know if the vet removed part of the bowel? Cos that's really what they should do if it's the bowel that's infected, it's not dangerous at all and they use those dissolving stitches. Did they put in a draining tube? They should have if they didn't. Did they prescribe antibiotics? If not, call them asap Monday and DEMAND you get it. Better safe than sorry. Again, glad the thingie is out now.

I just knew it was this obstruction because the symptoms sounded so much like the cat of my friends. Her kitty was very sick, too. But somehow, the little thing pulled through. It took awhile. We will all be sending positive feelings your way. Even though this is a very serious condition, it is good news your kitty has a fighting chance. [Edited 1/25/09 4:48am]

I don't think the vet removed part of the bowel, or used dissolving stitches. I think because the bowel was so infected, the vet probably didn't want to risk cutting it. And I think he wanted to use stronger stitches, to try to hold everything together. The way that the vet explained it to me is that when the bowel is infected, it makes it really hard to stitch it back up after surgery. I don't think the cat has a draining tube, but I know they have him on an IV, so that the meds are going through his bloodstream on a continual basis. I'm still hoping and praying for the best. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Another update: Reebok seems to be improving, slowly but surely. In fact, I got to visit with him for a short time at the vet's tonight. He seems better, more alert than he was before. They have him hooked up to an IV that is allowing meds to flow into his system, to help with the infection. I can see in his eyes that he is still in pain, poor thing. But I think anybody would be in pain, after swallowing a foreign object, having your intestines all blocked and infected, and then having to have surgery to correct it.
I asked the vet what my cat had swallowed, and he showed it to me. Turns out Reebok swallowed the rubber end only of the door stopper that is in my bathroom, which looks kind of like this: I think the reason why Reebok swallowed it is because it probably was on the bathroom floor, and I didn't realize it. I think the cat mistook it for food, so he ate it. Needless to say, I've removed the door stopper from that door, so I don't have this incident happening again. The vet said that if Reebok continues to be doing well, that I will be able to take him home tomorrow night. I know that Reebok would be very happy to go home, he seemed really happy to see me. In fact, he was trying to climb through the bars of the door that was on the cage that he was in. I think he was trying to get into my lap, so he could cuddle with me. When we let him walk around a bit outside of his cage, he was nearly tripping himself up on the IV that was attached to his leg. Silly cat; he probably misses me as much as I miss him. Thanks again for your prayers and kind thoughts, they are very much appreciated. Hopefully Reebok will be able to come home tomorrow, and hopefully he will continue to improve. Just talked to the vet this morning, and he said that Reebok is doing well ("eating, purring and running around" - lol!) I get to take him home tonight! I hope he continues to improve, since I'm still concerned about the infection in his intestines, and about his stitches not staying put because of said infection. I'm happy, but I'm still guardedly optimistic about it. Reebok is a feisty cat, so hopefully his feistiness will enable him to continue fighting and getting better. I'm still continuing to pray that everything goes well for him.
Thanks to all for your orgnotes, kind messages, prayers and hugs. I really, truly appreciate it! It's wonderful to know that there are so many people on the org who care. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.
