Damn... IceNine was once a Hip-Hop head. Who'dathoughtit? Man... I used to get into it back in the late eighties/early nineties. The newer stuff just totally ruined it for me... the focus on cars, gold, boats, houses and all that just messed up the old message of murder and dope. I don't know... I just liked the music in the older stuff a lot better too. They seemed more talented and the beats were a billion times better in my estimation. SUPERJOINT RITUAL - http://www.superjointritual.com

I don't. Still - EPIC. You know I just gave away all my Radiohead CDs... had bought them all because I really like Coldplay and based on that, folks suggested I give Radiohead a try...
So I went out and impulsively bought all of their CDs (that's how much I like Coldplay's style and respect the opinions of my advisors) and I just couldn't feel it. The music is too electronica laced and the vocals are horrible for me--barely audible whining. At least with Coldplay I can hear what them bammas are whining about! That's what most people say who aren't into Radiohead: Thom Yorke's voice is whiny. I said that too when I first listened to them on my own, I told an acquaintence of mine that Yorke whined. He said, "But it's a glorious whine." After listening more and more, I have to agree. Yorke's vocals are sometimes unintelligible, but I FEEL Thom. His style has a lot of emotion to me. I don't have to be in love with a singer's voice to have an affinity for how they sing and/or what they're singing. If you listen to Miles Davis' Bitches Brew and In A Silent Way albums you'll hear where some of Radiohead's influence comes from, particularly on the OK Computer and Kid A albums. They said they were listening to Bitches Brew a lot during the recording of OK Computer too. They compose a lot of abstract music, so I know it's not for everybody. From their debut single "Creep" to where they've come in almost a decade is monumental. If I had been in a coma since 1993 I might have thought they had become a one hit wonder. But their ambition is outside of the pop chart spectrum. There's so much in their music that's sort of down in the mix, that if you really aren't listening you may not hear it out of the gate. The more I listen, the more I discover. I find that to be true of all great albums. My favorite songs from OK Computer: "Airbag," "Paranoid Android," "Subterranean Homesick Alien," "Karma Police," and "The Tourist." I love the twists and turns that "Paranoid Android" takes. That very last note on the last song of this album ("The Tourist") gives me chills. The song is one of the best album closers I've ever heard. It's a concept album though, I realize everybody isn't into rock concept albums. The most obvious Radiohead comparison people make is to Pink Floyd. I favor Radiohead over Floyd, myself. Someone once said that "The National Anthem" from Kid A is something out of the Ornette Coleman cannon. I'm not familiar with Ornette's work, so I don't know. I know it's an individual taste thing, but personally I don't mind electronic music - as long as I can feel that human pulse in it. Sort of like part of the second half of 1999. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes. | |
