It's definitely varying - since I now freelance as a temp teacher, I have been to several schools - some really respect my experience and education and ask me to come to really teach, but two schools have called me and asked me, respectively:

- If I'd come and work with 6 yo kids... what am I, a babysitter?
- If I'd come and work in their school kitchen?!?!? I don't think so, I didn't teach for years and study to peel potatoes in some icky kitchen.

So sometimes yes, some schools call me first cos they know there'll be actual teaching going on and no riots in the classroom But then as in the examples above, not at all.

Depends on your boss, but in my case I work for a small company and we get looked after pretty well.

They aren't hands on happy clappy hippy types who will ask me everyday how I feel about my childhood, you know, but if i was in trouble with something I know they'd make allowances with time off and such like, so long as the need was genuine and not me taking liberties.

I'm afraid that I don't have much experience with bosses that would allow my pimp-ass to be able to submit a reply to this thread topic with any real substantiality.

I've had both kinds.

In general, though...I think a manager/boss is primarily concerned about you as a person to the extent that what goes on with you personally affects your ability to get the job done. They need to maintain a certain degree of detachment in order to be an effective manager.

With the exception of my first employer back in high school (with whom I'm still good friends), I'm about 98% certain my bosses all have appreciated me solely as an employee.

You'd have to be a sociopath not to care about any of your employees. But the reality is that these bosses are there to do a job, just like you. The only difference is that their job entails making sure that the business is profitable enough.

Oftentimes, to do this job properly (i.e. not getting your own ass fired, or ending up in bankruptcy), you have to learn how to separate the personal from the professional. You might feel bad that you have to fire someone (for instance), but if you're overly sensitive, you could very well steer the company into a situation where everybody's out the door.

There is no single answer to this, it has to depend. I don't really work in a place with a BOSS character. I have bosses and I am a boss (Manager) but you would have to be a complete arse not to care about any of the people you work with/for/for you. How people do their job usually affects my opinion of them, but I care about all of those I work closely with.

No, you are just a means to an end to the majority of them.

not my boss. during xmas our asst manager asked all of the employees if they wanted to pitch in money to buy him a gift. like a fool i threw in money and come to find out between everybody else he got a 200 dollar gift card to dave and busters. here I'm makin chump change while he brings in over a 100 g's a year and the dude didn't even thank us for our contributions plus he's been cutting hours into the new year. but i guess my complainin ass should be happy I still have a job but to answer the question I don't think he cares that me as a human being has living expenses and I need the hours to make my rent and pay my bills and to him I'm just another employee that works at a store he runs.

Some care some don't. I am in a good place to have a very compentent female boss who has also become my friend as well.

But it also depends on the employee as well. We have folks at my job who always whine about work, miss time for no valid reason and don't want to cross-train to learn nothing new. Any job now is competetive and you have to stay alert. You can not longer say "This is not my job" or you may not have a job!!

I always try to learn as much as possible from any job and I keep my resume and dress suit ready just in case. I have been laid off before but was able to get a job rather quickly. Plus I never take the attitude of a job being beneath my skill level.

I have been a temp before for years with benefits and that was fine with me. Bosses asre under stress as well so as what you can do to help workwise. I also check to see what kind of financial shape the company is in as well.
