I'm born & raised in America, but I've been told numerous times that I sound like I'm from England. Go figure...I mean figour!

To answer the question, an english accent is nice, but like Americans, it really depends. Bond? Nice accent! Listening to Amy Winehouse speak is like torture. I'm not too fond of Eliza Doolittle, either "eh wouldn't it be loverly?"

James Earl Jones, on the other hand. Isn't he American? John F. Kennedy? hideous! Your average sorority girl? Not so good. Young Kathleen Turner? Nice!

My point exactly. Thank you.

okay, wait a minute.
let me see if i got this right.

PLEASE tell me you're not one of those people that lives in the US, but because you "visit" England a lot you talk with an English accent.

you live in England, right? because if you don't live in England, i don't care how many freaking times you visit there, you're INTENTIONALLY speaking like that. which bugs the crap out of me, and reeks of what i like to call "douchebaggery".

Neither do I live in the U.S., nor do I live in England.

I live in Austria. Still, I rather have a British accent than any other (especially the Austrian English ill), because it just sounds better in my opinion and why would I use an ugly, not "correct" accent like the Austrian when I'm actually able to use a perfectly British one? I would call that "douchebaggery".

see this is precisely your problem

this is not a light hearted question- people who speak Brithish English think that they are explicit perfection- doesn't matter what country they are in -ie- Ghana, Australia, U.S.,etc-

those who worship and are sticklers for their beloved accent are in my opinion the most snobish stuck up people on the face of the earth-

GET OVER IT- no matter how you try to mask your question- it still comes off the same for me- SNOB SNOB SNOB- and NO I DON'T WANT TO SPEAK THE KINGS ENGLISH!!!!!
LOVE HARD.

the "KING" who forced his language upon countless people who had their own language and customs. the "KING" who has down to this day enslaved his followers with the ideals that "theirs" is "only" and "best". Have you ever wondered why so many are struggling to be embraced? There is a poison that runs in the veins of those who think it best not to respect others. To call my language or accent "ugly" (for lack of a better word i'm assuming) is disrespectful and very telling .

You're seriously saying that if one comes from a country where English isn't the first language one should ADOPT (cos that's what I would be doing, ADOPT) or CULTIVATE the accent that YOU see as "natural" to that country? You aren't seeing the obvious here - if those are your standards then you should refuse English altogether because it's not your first language. Good luck with those attitudes. shake

Okay, that I disagree with.

Just wanted to make clear that my earlier clapping wasn't a blanket endorsement.

Excuse me? Are you suggesting that your telling me to "stop living up to the stereotype of americans ffs" (which is what really started this entire string) wasn't insulting? Especially 24 hours after my initial posts on this thread? (So basically, you dragged the whole thing up after it had died down.)

You're funny. lol
