Coldest temperatures in 5 years.

The Twin Cities Metro will see temperatures near -20 below by sunrise Thursday which would be the coldest since January 30th when the low dipped to -24 below. The record low for the Twin Cities is -37 below set in 1888 - the coldest low for January 15th in the Metro in the past 100 years is -32 below set in 1963. Along with the bitter cold air temperatures will be dangerously cold wind-chills through Friday - the National Weather Service has issued a WIND CHILL WARNING through Friday for Wind-chills down to -40 below and possibly even colder at times - these kind of temperatures and wind-chills can lead to frostbite in minutes to exposed skin. Temperatures will moderate back into the 20s by the weekend and some light snow will come along with the increase in temperature.

I'm not sure how cold it got here through the night but it was -2 at 10:30 pm when I came through the little village by my house. The Lake Huron is freezing fast and the ice fishermen are out. nuts
My water pipes froze and it took hours with a space heater to get them thawed. And it's not even the coldest day yet. cry That's Friday.

I saw the weather on FOX tonight. The weather man was in Minnesota. Just to demonstrate how freezin it is, he took a jersey, put it on the tree next to him, spoke to his co-worker for about 3-5 mins, then when he picked up the jersey it was as stiff as an effin board! eek

When I someday claim that I'm interested in a residency in Minnesota, will you PLEASE remind me that I've only ever been in MPLS during fall and spring? Kthx.

It's all kinda fun to joke about until you hit a patch of 'black ice'

MINNEAPOLIS -- Wear hats and mittens. Bring pets indoors. Insulate pipes. Keep the elderly and children inside.

Those are the latest bits of advice from the National Weather Service on Thursday, as Minnesota remains trapped in a bitter cold spell.

The air temperature was 29 degrees below zero in Glenwood on Thursday morning, with a wind chill reading of 54 degrees below zero. It was 23.1 degrees below in Duluth, with a wind chill of negative 47. The temperature in Hutchinson was minus 27.

It was 20 degrees below zero at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, but the wind chill made it feel like 37 below zero.

The last time we were in this arctic arena it was 5 years ago in January of 2004.

Nearly all of the state was under a wind chill warning Thursday morning.

It will be sunny and very cold Thursday. Temperatures will range from -19 below (wind-chill -37 below) at 8 a.m., then -9 below (wind-chill -29 below) at noon and -5 below (wind-chill -22 below) at sunset (4:58 p.m.).

Winds will be from the west-northwest at 6 to 12 mph during the day and the west-southwest at 4 to 8 mph in the evening.

Clear skies are expected Thursday night with lows near -18 below (wind-chill -35 below) and winds will be light from the west-southwest at 4 to 8 mph.

Friday morning is also expected to be cold, but then the warmup starts. Forecasters say it might even reach the 30s by Monday or Tuesday.

Salvation Army searches for people needing shelter

The sunset Wednesday afternoon was simply the beginning of what promised to be the coldest night in five years. And the bitter wind is pushing people into homeless shelters throughout the Metro area. The Salvation Army's Harbor Light shelter in downtown Minneapolis usually houses about 450 people a night. But the shelter was expecting more than 500 Wednesday night. "We make use of every available floor space in our facility so individuals do not find themselves outside in the cold," says Maj. Darryl Leedom, commander of the Greater Twin Cities Salvation Army. They're not just waiting for people to come to them. Dominck Bouza drove into the city looking for those who need a place to stay. "The big thing I'm looking for right now is somebody who's intoxicated, who's not really aware of what they're facing right now," Bouza says. He checked all the common hangouts but found no one. Apparently it was cold enough to drive even the diehards inside. Then, an hour into his search, Bouza finds three men near the Basilica of St. Mary. "Do you want a place to stay tonight?" Bouza asks. Two of the men turn down his offer, saying they have about 20 blankets to help keep them warm. The third man plans to seek shelter after he spends more time asking for money on a street corner. "At the very least, I can tell him that if he needs a warm place to stay ... he's got a place to go inside," Bouza says. "But obviously I can't force him to do it."
