I took my kid to the pediatrician today, she spent an hour with us, going through his history. She'll be calling his teacher and school psychologist and basically making note of everything (very thorough!)

She doesn't think it's OCD, tourettes or ADHD, since the only symptom he has are the various tics, and he has no behavioural issues or problems at school academically or socially. She asked me to keep a tic diary - which I wish I'd done since he was born. Anyway, it has left me feeling very positive about everything. My son really liked her too.
Very good news thus far

I really agree not to medicate the child. Good luck charlotte and I hope you figure things out to help your son hug

Does he do any of this in his sleep? I went out with this guy that would flinch all night long in his sleep. He wasn't on drugs that I know of but he was a very imaginative, hyper guy. Don't think it was drugs because he was way too lucid during converstaions and things of that nature.

he has a hard time falling asleep at night, the throat clearing keeps him awake, but once asleep he is pretty quiet, once or twice during the night if he rouses he will do it a few times.

This might sound stupid but have you considered maybe exercising him so his energy is spent?

I don't know, those sound like things I've done from time to time myself. i think they're just an excess of energy in my case (bouncing my feet or tensing my left shoulder). I haven't met your son, so I don't know to what extent he's doing them.

I feel like he'll stop clearing his throat once he's not fixated on it (like when he falls asleep) but how do you make a person not fixate on stuff? Maybe redirection?

dunno, doc says it will probably go away on its own, just like the blinking has, probably to be replaced by some other thing

yeah, we just put our tension in different places.

I just noticed I was bouncing my foot. It's something I am aware of, but I am glad nobody ever made me feel weird about it. I just have to watch that I am not annoying someone. Like that pet peeves thread, I'm the guy chewing his food in a rhythm

grouphug so sorry that your family is going through this! comfort my son does the nervous cough thing all of the time too, so we thought maybe he had allergies or something, so we took him to the doctor. the doctor said that it's a nervous thing he does, and that he should grow out of it in time. we have been going through alot of stress the last few months with trying to move, etc...and i think it's really affected him. he's a very hyper-active child anyways, and his teachers he had at pre-school had trouble keeping up with him! lol they also said he's years ahead with math, and loves to count and add and subtract (at age 4 eek ) and that they were amazed at how great he is at math! which is funny since my husband and i are both bad at it! lol

good honey the diary is a great thing 2. maybe its a nervous thing sometimes fearful of my anxiety coming on ( the way it manifests is not pretty) i rock back and forth and now in public sometimes. i never really noticed it ( publicly) until i was at uni for an info session and the girl next 2 me said that i was rocking and it was a sign of anxiety.

you rock girl!

lol

he's not a real anxious type though, and rocks and blinks and clears his throat even when he's just excited.

awwwww, ur so nice charlotte. Ah ok. maybe it will go away on its own?

i think that she took him 2 the docs.

She doesn't think it's OCD, tourettes or ADHD, since the only symptom he has are the various tics, and he has no behavioural issues or problems at school academically or socially.
