I don't understand paying hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars for said purse.

One - it's pretty. We feel good carrying a nice purse.
Two - there are rarely pockets in women's clothing. And even if there are, we need more things to carry around than could fit and/or it ruins the line of our clothing by bulking up all of our pockets.
How do you carry around your wallet, keys and cell phone? Now factor in a checkbook, lip gloss, a bottle of ibuprofen, eyeliner and powder and compact and that would look hideous bulging out of our pockets.

I use the handbag to transport the wallet and sunglasses, keys, babywipes, tampons, and chapstick. I'm good to go with those things. I also use the handbags to stow store receipts and shopping lists until I get home.

Funnily enough, many articles of women's clothes don't sport roomy pockets to shove all those things in

I can see MORE problems with NOT carrying all that stuff in one portable convenient bag, my husband has all those problems, simultaneously.
a) he can never remember which pants/car he left his card wallet in
b) he leaves tissues in his pockets which mess up the laundry
c) he has to tip all the change out of his pockets when he comes home, on any available surface, only to find when he wants change, it's mysteriously missing!
d) He has been known to lose $$ notes, falling out of his pockets if sitting in a deep seat
