Three cheers for Boston College!

The Athletic Director, Gene DeFillippo, told the football coach, Jeff Jagodzinski, not to talk to the New York Jets about their open head coach position. DeFillippo had hired Jagodzinski two years ago, signed him to a five-year contract (although Jagodzinski had never held a head coaching position in his life), and said that in return for that committment, he wanted loyalty in return. Jagodzinski promised to be loyal.

But then the Jets' job came up, and Jagodzinski was rumored to be a candidate. So DeFillippo told Jagodzinski that if he went and talked to the Jets, he'd be fired.

Jagodzinski went and talked to the Jets.

He was fired.

Maybe - just maybe - this will be the first step to a contract actually meaning something in sports.

That contract wouldn't have meant shit to that A.D. If he had been losing. If a guy has a chance to better himself you shouldn't fire him for going to a damn interview.
If you're not doing the fucking, then you're taking one.

Maybe just maybe they will NEVER get a quality coach 2 coach there again. People interview 4 jobs everyday of the week. This was a BAD idea.

I am sure BC isn't worried about that.

Won't they be interviewing the next guy 2 coach there? Should he be fired from his current job?

BC cares about loyalty only when it comes to them.... they believe their money is greener. They did warn his azz though... he should have been more discreet.

violator

I see it as both sides made a choice that they felt was best for them. I don't see a problem with it either way.

You know what? Maybe you're right. But the difference is that if BC had fired Jagodzinski, he'd still get paid. Why? Because he has a CONTRACT.

But if Jagodzinski said, "FU, BC!" and went to the Jets, what would BC have gotten for their bargain of the contract.

Zip.

In baseball, if a team wants to interview another team's coach under contract, they have to get permission from that team. Sometimes the employing team doesn't grant that permission. And you know what?

No one bitches about that.

Let's look at the other side of the coin. What if you went to interview
for another job that may be a step up, should your boss hold you back and
threaten to fire you if you interviewed for that job. Let's be honest
BC is basically a stepping stone for most coaches. It's not one of the big
boy institutions. That's why your last coach bolted for N.C State.
Boston College is a nice story but if you have a chance to coach an NFL team
and it is a move up why not interview. I can't speak for everyone but most jobs
now tell you that you can terminate your employment anytime and they can
terminate you anytime so there really is a silent code of unloyalty in sports
and business.
Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint
