my house flooded!

Well, for fuck's sake. omfg

Our disturbingly and abnormally large amount of snow began to melt with a vengeance today. Combine that with the non-stop rain -I woke up at 7 am and it was already pouring and hasn't really stopped yet. The roomie and I live in a basement suite. At about 11 am there was a bit of water on his bedroom floor. An hour later, everywhere but the kitchen was a lake.

Thanks. hug

Rain's usually the norm for weather out here, but we had a freakish amount of snow over Christmas. (most years we're lucky to get an inch, this year it was over a foot confused ) Now it's warm enough today that the pouring rain's combined with the melting snow and is wreaking havoc. A lot of side streets have water a couple inches high at this point.

I wouldn't be surprised if other people in basement suites found themselves the new owners of indoor pools today.

Gotta love this time of year.

I'm on the bottom of a hill so I suspect that had something to do with the leakage. Good thing I have a 2 hour break between morning and afternoon classes so I could be there when it started. I'd hate to have come home at 5 to find water up to my knees.

We moved everything that could possibly get water damage off the floor with the quickness. Most of what we own is hanging from the ceiling or balanced precariously on the couch right now. lol

Our landlord's insurance should take care of any damage, and since he's a contractor himself he's already hard at work ripping up the floor and walls to fix them. Last night we both found friends to crash with, and my dog's in the kennel for the time being. After this the landlord and his girlfriend -who live in the upstairs of the house -have offered to let us stay with them until the water's fully drained and repairs can be made.

Naw, I'm still glad I'm not in Kelowna. They had a snowstorm yesterday. I'd rather deal a bit of dampness than freeze my piercings off. razz

That's horrible!

I guess I can be thankful it was nice, clean rainwater coming in and not sewer backup. ill

Yup. nod

It's an older house, so combine that with uncharacteristically weird weather and the building just couldn't handle it. Under normal Vancouver rainy conditions this wouldn't have happened, but with a foot's worth of melting snow, it was just too much for the old thing to handle. Just a freak weather accident. shrug

We tried to get insurance, but even including the electronics what we own didn't add up to enough to get coverage. lol

We'll probably have to replace a few things like the rug in the living room and my DVD rack, but nothing huge or costly. Thankfully the water only got a few inches high and we were quick to move any valuables off the floor. So glad we were both home yesterday -my computer and TV were both on the floor.

I love it here, even wiht the stupid weather! Before I made the decision to get the hell out of Kelowna, I spent a long time deliberating which city to call my new home. I'm glad I chose this one.

That said, I'm kind of jealous of you for living in Edmonton. That's my real hometown, and I miss it. I even considered going back there until I remembered how much I loathe prairie winters. razz
