New Movie: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

"I was born under unusual circumstances."

And so begins The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, adapted from the 1920s story by F. Scott Fitzgerald about a man who is born in his eighties and ages backwards: a man, like any of us, who is unable to stop time. We follow his story, set in New Orleans from the end of World War I in 1918, into the 21st century, following his journey that is as unusual as any mans life can be. Directed by David Fincher and starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett with Taraji P. Henson, Tilda Swinton, Jason Flemyng, Elias Koteas and Julia Ormond, Benjamin Button, is a grand tale of a not-so-ordinary man and the people and places he discovers along the way, the loves he finds, the joys of life and the sadness of death, and what lasts beyond time.

Anyone else interested in this project? Anyone know the F. Scott Fitzgerald story?

I want to see this movie. It looks like it might be a tough watch though seeing Cate Blanchett's character age normally while Brad gets younger. Very sad.

Cool idea with the reverse type on the Brad Pitt poster.

Can you imagine that? If they met at the same age, with each year they'd be two years further apart in age. That's awful! shake

I'd never heard of the Fitzgerald story, but I think that premise is really intriguing.

I think I read once the movie being described as something like two people aging in different directions trying to meet somewhere in the middle.

I never heard of the original story either.

I just wanted to say it was a very enjoyable movie, and I didn't check my watch until 2 hours into it, and never wanted to leave the theatre until the very end.

I have the attention span of about 80 minutes (I blame CDs).

Here's one reviewer who's familiar with the original story and none too happy with the movie:

(full text at http://www.weta.org/authorauthor/?p=177)

Every adaptation tells its own story, and every adaptation is, well, adapted. It’s not the original, and often it veers sharply away from the original’s plot.

But I sharply dislike adaptations that veer this far from the original’s spirit. Read Fitzgerald’s wonderful story, and you’ll get humor, irony, satire, and a keen sense of human folly. Watch the adaptation, and what do you get? Hmmmmm, what a surprise, given that it’s written by Eric Roth, the screenwriter behind Forrest Gump. You get sentimentality, an unreliable narrator who is a Witness to History, and a lot of scenery.

I'm not rushing out to see this movie, but I might rent it sometime.

Do they show him being born? That's one vagina that will NEVER recover.

Does he get smaller and smaller until he turns into an Oscar statue at the end of the credits?
Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it.

I don't want to go anywhere near Seven Pounds or Valkyrie. Especially Valkyrie. Cruise doesn't even try to do a German accent. Ridiculous.

I really need to see these too...I was reading reviews of them in the paper and all sounded good. Frank Miller wrote and directed The Spirit so it should definitely be visually delightful

I cannot stand Brad Pitt. He has this weird "acting" voice in every movie I've seen him in. It's so annoying!

lol

The movie seems kind of strange. I might see it on DVD.

I may have to get drunk first though. lol

By the way, I saw previews for all of these movies before the same movie, which is why I have the titles and casts and plots all mixed up lol

And they all said "DECEMBER" at the end, and I was just like DAMN these are all out now?
