If winter's not your thing, either the Lower Mainland in BC or Vancouver Island is your best bet. It's the warmest part of the country, with the least amount of snow . This winter notwithstanding. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I'm told that, in contrast to the city's natural beauty, there are a lot of aggressive beggars, heroin addicts and prostitutes on the streets. Apparently, there is little nightlife, as well. From a 'Toronto vs. Vancouver' thread on another board: In general there is way more homelessness, drug use (like, scary drugs like heroin) and crime in Vancouver (there are obvious reasons like it's a port city so there are more drugs, also the temperate weather means you can be homeless here 365 days a year without dying of exposure or heat exhaustion like you would in T.O. or most other Canadian cities and more poverty and drugs = more crime) -- there are neighbourhoods I don't like to walk around in here, I never felt that in Toronto, and I also never saw needles on the sidewalk in Toronto. I'm mentioning it not necessarily to discourage you, there's a lot of things I like about Vancouver (Granville Island! Main Street! Stanley Park! the Pacific Ocean!) but it was a HUGE shock to me and my boyfriend when we moved out here from Toronto and it is part of the culture that you should be prepared for should you decide to move here.
Toronto is Canada's New York. Vancouver sounds like more of a Seattle. Vancouver really isn't all that bad. While it's true that we do have Canada's poorest neighbourhood and all the social ills that go along with that, it's also true that just like any other problem the best way to deal with it is, well, to deal with it. The Campbell government and the last municipal government were fucking criminal in their neglect of the Downtown Eastside, and their actions and policies did nothing but exaserbate the problem. And with the coming Olympics (FUCK the Olympics and everyone who wanted them here ) the matter is only going to continue to be swept under the rug. But all that said, I can honestly say there is not a neighbourhood in this city -even that one -that I am afraid of. Those who are afraid of homeless people and prostitutes IMO need to stop and examine their own prejudices. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"
