What is the difference between "Black Tie" and "Black Tie Optional"?

Well...? Black Tie is formal, but Black Tie Optional is also formal except men have the option of wearing a tuxedo or a dark suit? So the optional part only applies to men? Females can still wear either a cocktail dress or a formal ballgown?

Just wondering, I'm going to be attending an event next Saturday and the attire is Black Tie Optional.
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

"Black tie" refers to formal attire, men and women included. "Black tie optional" is less strict, but you should still make the attempt to look nice.

Yes, I'd say a nice cocktail dress would be appropriate, where "Black tie" would necessitate a formal gown.

Okay so you think a formal gown would be a bit too much for the Black Tie Optional affair? If I focus on a cocktail dress, can it be a different color other than black? I'm getting really tired of dressy black dresses, I want something a little different.

Yeah, go with a different color. (You're talking to a broad who got married in a black dress, though, so you probably shouldn't listen to me.)

Depending on the event, this is probably less true in the States than in England.

black tie = must. miss.

black tie optional = probably should miss it, but chances are some asshole will show up in jeans and one of those t-shirts with a tuxedo image on it--that's worth showing up for if the buffet is also good.

falloff but I don't go to Black Tie events much. It would be nice to go and feel like I have a million dollars in my bank account for one night. Its an Inaugural Gala for our newly elected Mayor of the city I live in. Hopefully there will be some tenderonies there, who are single....I know I know, what single man pays that much for an event when he can just go to a bar for $70 less? But who knows, there might be some professional, single tenderonies there...at least I hope so. smile

Exactly - and this is true in the States as well as in England.

Black tie optional means - at the very least - a dark suit and tie for men, and dressier than cocktail for women. Not a full-on evening dress...but something structured as opposed to slinky.

Besides, how often does anyone get the chance to get really dressed up anymore? Take advantage of it!

I've been to inaugural galas. You are always better off going with evening dress. The purpose of these things is to see and be seen. You want to look your best.

Phil does have class, but he has to ride the short bus to get to it.
