Yeah, out here in Lafayette, LA we don't speak like that at all. The closest was Rene lol!

I swear it drives me nuts when I watch movies/shows based in New Orleans (where I'm from) or other parts of Louisiana and they make is seem like WE ALL speak like this....it gets good at about the two minute or so mark...rolleyes
"The Big Easy"

I was born, raised, and lived in NO all my life (excluding my time in the Army) and I have never referred to any woman as "chere`"... lol

Yeah, we kind of sound like Dennis Q. on here but not as bad. We do say Cher out here though. That Cajun band sucked in the back and embarrassed me royaly. They did just add Cajun/Creole music to the grammy's just last year and I'm still trying to figure out how my favorite artists are not up there. The people on there were horrible. Well, may-be I could tolorate the guy that did won last year. But the nomis for this year sucks so far. mad Where's my Chris Ardoin and Keith Frank dang it!

As for New Orleans, they do have their own accent but it's not as bad as what the movies portray it to be. It's just a mess how they do try to put us Louisianan people as. Meh yeah cher!

I don't know how familiar you are with the areas surrounding N.O., but folks from St. Bernard Parish (Chalmette, Meraux, Violet) either sound like the "typical" cajun or like Brooklyn transplants....I know that I have a hard time convincing folks I'm not from N.Y....no one believes that I'm from the deep south...

...though I'm sure that you used to cause a heart to flutter when you say chere.... lol

I often assume people from NO and other parts of LA are West Indians. There's something about the patois that's similar to me. lol

B.K. (before Katrina), you could tell what part of the city someone was from by their accents....just subtle differences, a bit of twang or lilt here or there....and as you branch deeper into the state, the sounds just go all over the map...

I used to kick it in Ruston, Grambling and Monroe and never heard all that twang on a black person. lol I guess what makes it odd to me is that nobody else on the show talks like that. If they've all lived in the same place all their lives I'd expect their accents to be similar. She's the one sticking out like a sore thumb. lol

eek Dude, I totally thought it was near Monroe cuz the redheaded waitress and Rene went to Monroe for a date night on one episode so I assumed it was more North. Is Bon Temps a real town?

No....Bon Temps is a fictional place...but I stand corrected....I'm not all too familiar with how the rest of LA looks, so I just assumed it was set in the bayous....my bad!! boxed

Isn't Fangtasia also supposed to be in Monroe?

And where is Bunky? I think the restaurant Sam and Sookie visited to investigate the murders was supposed to be there.

I just laugh at the fact that the name of the town where everyone is getting murdered is BON TEMPS... Good Times.

Yeah, I had family that lived in St. Bernard Parish. I am originally from St. Martinville, LA I now live in Lafayette, LA right in the middle of the lower boot. Yeah, people love the way I speak, it's not totally cajun or creole -I don't know that kind of french like my elders - a little but not much- but people laugh and tell me to speak all the time b/c it sounds cute when I'm not home.
