To break it down, the east is rolling hills, low green mountains
and bustling cities...beautiful scenery and coastline...

The midwest is a nondescript transition Not that there
isn't any beautiful scenery here however

And the west is more wide open, wild, high snowy mountains....
gorgeous scenery in a different way from the east, until you
get right along the west coast, which is for the most part rugged
and rocky in the north to sandy beaches in the south...of course
then you have bustling cities there such as Los Angeles and San Diego.

Then going from north to south....the temps at this time of year are
colder in the north and warmer in the south.

And if you plan to be in the northeast (New York City,etc.) you have to
expect to have snow if you'll be there in the winter months.....just in
case nobody's told you

our trip might end up being quite similar to yours, except we'll probably fly east to west.

Well if you are going to do that, You could take PCH 1 from San Diego alllll the way through San Francisco.

You could day trip in Mexico. (5 minutes outside of San Diego) Take the kids to Sea world....
San Juan Capistrano ( The California Missions)
Drive through the coastline and even stop at Disneyland...
See Los Angeles / Orange County
Head up through Solvang / Morrow Bay
drive through Big Sir
hit Monterey Bay
catch the Redwood Forrest
Yosemite
San Francisco
The Japanese Tea Gardens

All this and all you have done is driven 10 hours pretty much in a straight line. A gadzillion trips along the way all 40 minutes or so apart which is easy on the kids/you.

I'm closer to Chicago, since I'm in Minneapolis
