Holidaze Feng Shui Tip The symbol of the bird is said to be very important in November, as it is associated with many of the events and influences that color this month. Certainly the major holiday of this month almost centers completely around a bird. It is also believed that, as the seasons change, celebrations involving other species of birds ensure that this time of pending darkness will not triumph over the people (the light) and that joy triumphs over sorrow. In Feng Shui, one bird that can protect against corrupt influences, evil and negativity is the rooster. Displaying any representation or symbol of this bird inside the house is said to bring protection and beneficial and benevolent energies to all family members. He is considered both a courageous and a courteous bird, qualities he shares with whatever space he is situated in. This crowing cock also represents achievement and fame and would do well to be perched in the 'Fame' area of home or office. And, speaking of the office, it has long been held (and confirmed by many of my clients) that placing a rooster figurine on your desk will stop office politicking or any interoffice angst where you are concerned. Bring this bird into your house and let him protect you on almost every front. Cockadoodle-YOU!

What a lucky break! You got the longer piece of the wishbone while everyone else holds the short end of the proverbial poultry stick. There actually really is ancient lore that suggests that the bones of the rooster and the hen (and the turkey too) were believed to be imbued with sacred and magical powers. The chicken, of course, because it is such a prodigious layer of eggs, a symbol that in almost every culture speaks to all things fertility and therefore filled with fortune and luck. Since way back when the breastbones of these birds were believed to bring wishes to bear and thought to be able to make dreams come true.

This first day of December is sometimes referred to as 'Eat a Red Apple Day.' Though I have often advised that displaying a bowl of apples in any open area of the home -- especially on either dining room or kitchen table -- promotes both peace and prosperity in your space, today I'll tell you how to make the best of eating them. First, you need to think about something you would really like to see happen in your life. Then, reduce that wish to one or two words, like -- for instance -- love or health. With a pin or a thorn, inscribe that word into the skin of a ripe red apple. Hold the apple in both hands and think about your wish and then spend a few minutes visualizing what your life would look like if that desire were to manifest. Acting 'as if' this particular dream had already come true, cut the apple into quarters, dip the pieces first in some honey and then sprinkle with cinnamon before eating each piece slowly and with intent. Once the entire apple has been eaten, express some form of gratitude for this edible treat and then wait 27 days to see the fruits of these intention laden labors.

There is a traditional Chinese saying that is often applied to activities associated with this time of year: 'Heed the time limit, the five colors blind.' This means that too much of anything -- especially colors, sounds, food and drink -- can physically, emotionally and mentally drain and exhaust you. In fact, too much food, drink and color will have a negative effect on not only you, but the rest of your family as well. In this culture, where I see people rushing the day after Thanksgiving to get their tree up and their gifts bought and wrapped and ready, it would do you well today to set a plan to holiday decorate no more than three weeks ahead. This conscious calendar will also help to create and maintain a sense of balance, happiness and harmony in your home during the holidays. If you find you must start some decorating, hang a sprig of mistletoe in the corner of every room of the main floor to find more prosperity and protection surrounding you in the days and weeks to come.

I will only eat it out of the bird if my mom makes it.

'Repeal Day'
His nose like a cherry and his eyes all twinkling ... No, I'm not talking about a certain someone with a round belly that jiggles like a bowl full of jelly, but, rather, about celebrating today's 'Repeal Day' energies, a remembrance of when the 21st Amendment officially ended the dry days of Prohibition many thousands of consumed cocktails ago. If you like to have a cocktail yourself every once in a while, you may want to make and share this drink that has been linked to amour, as well as to helping to bring about positive powers of change and transformation in your own life. Warm a liter of brandy over low heat and add a cup of orange sections, a half grapefruit also sectioned, and two cups of raspberries. Stir and then add a 12oz. can of pears (with juice), a cup of crushed pineapple, a cup of sugar, a teaspoon vanilla extract and two cloves. Cover and keep in a cool place for two weeks. After that time, strain and enjoy! This elixir will truly make sure that there's no place like your home for the holidays!

Today marks the Feast of Saint Nicholas, a man generous of heart and spirit who, because of his propensity to give away all of his goods and money, is believed to be the pre-cursor of our modern-day Santa Claus. Although there are many beautiful legends ascribed to Saint Nicholas, there is one that relates to romance, money and love that is still enacted by those who faithfully trust in his intercession. Legend tells that Saint Nicholas heard of a beleaguered father who had no dowry for his three daughters. Hearing of this plight, Nicholas went to this man's house under cover of night and threw three bags of gold (one for each daughter) through the window. Another story holds the he dropped the bags of gold down the chimney whereupon they fell into the daughter's stockings drying at the hearth. Either way, to this day, believers still hang three gold balls on the outside of the door to the home or on the fireplace thereby symbolizing those three sacks of gold that were so many years ago said to bring the beloved to the house. If you do decide to do a little early in house decorating, don't forget to hit a holiday homerun by placing three gold balls on the hearth or at the door. Then don't be surprised when love and money come knocking.

The festive winter season is often commemorated with hosts of decorative flowers, some of which would most appropriately and appreciatively be festooned around some of your space today, Winter Flowers Day! Aromas associated with pine (placing a branch of same over the main door of the house is said to ensure continual joy within, for the leaves are evergreen), cloves (when worn or carried on the person are said to attract the opposite sex, and are also believed to bring comfort to those mourning or grieving) and orange (using pieces of the peels of nine oranges in any bath will lift spirits and vibrations too) incorporated into any holiday wreaths or centerpieces of poinsettia, narcissus, hemlock or holly will purposefully plant you and yours firmly in your own personal Winter Wonderland.

On a day that not only recognizes the passage of the first Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations delegates in 1948, but also sees the annual awards by the Nobel Peace Prize committee to those individuals who have given their own energies striving to achieve same for everyone on the planet, we can do something straight from our hearts to add to those very same efforts; a peace-FULL humanity. In order to personally bring 'peace on Earth, goodwill to men' from inside your own space, take a green candle (the color accorded to peace, health and healing in Feng Shui) and carve the word 'Peace' into the candle with any sharp utensil or instrument. Now, anytime of any day that you personally feel like your private peaceful state of mind has been disturbed for any reason, go to that candle and light it. Sit quietly, breathing in and out, thinking that same single word: peace. Then, as soon as you feel a sense of balance and harmony restored in your world, you can be clear that you just helped to restore some to the world we all live in.

The stone most associated with the month of December and the sign of Sagittarius is beautiful blue turquoise, a precious gem associated with protection from all sorts of accidents, injury and illness. Many Native Americans also tell of this stone's indigenous power to protect from the proverbial 'evil eye.' Native to the Southwest, this stone is said to particularly protect travelers and all those involved with the health and healing arts. It is also believed that you should take a piece of turquoise outside during a new Moon and hold it up to the sky while making a wish for money, abundance and wealth. But you must be particularly clear about how much money -- the exact figure -- that you want. Then, once you have made the wish you blow on the turquoise and keep it close to you until the next new Moon, when your money will manifest.
