At every veterinary hospital that I've worked at we have to prepare owners for what they are about to see if they choose to stay in the room when their animal is put to sleep. Then in veterinary school they lecture to us pretty intensely on how to handle it ourselves and how to help owners through it. I could see the dog being put to sleep at the end of the movie as not being too horrible but to actually see the entire process is a bit much to experience without being prepared for it. I've never read the book 'Marley and Me' but I do know that there were two versions of the book released, one for adults and one for children. Did the children's version include the detailed euthanasia scene? thank you all i kept thinking about was my baby roxanne, she had to be put down after being hit by a car, it was the most horrible thing ever, she wasnt in any pain at all, but her back legs were totally useless, she just kept trying to get over to me, i was on the floor halfway laying in the pin with her, she died licking my arm - i will never forget that experience, i cried uncontrollably for like 30 minutes in there with her when it was over (my brother asked that we not cry for her last little bit of time here on earth, instead tell her what a good baby she was and try to be happy - break down afterwards) that was like 12 years ago and it still breaks my heart to think of her, she was a good baby, i have never had another one quite like her. I remember how horribly I cried when my pet turtle died. I don't even WANNA imagine what it'd be like loosing an animal with more of a personality. your account of your experience made me well up wow I feel like a baby...lol.

I can see them removing descriptive details, but I should hope they didn't change the ending. Part of why the story's been so enduringly popular is because of people being moved by the ending. The point of the story is detailing a pet owner's relationship with his dog; the good, the bad, and the ugly parts, exactly as he experienced it. Putting a pet to sleep is upsetting, but it's as much a part of the story as pee stains on the rug and shredded potted plants. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

They were 13 and 18 and both were so sick, it wasn't fair to prolong their lives anymore. Both were deaf, the younger one had thyroid problems, and the older one was blind and arthritic to the point she had difficulty walking. My sis, mother, and I were in the room with them when they went. It was the hardest thing to watch them close their eyes, knowing they weren't getting up again. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Okay, I had a feeling that the dog dies at the end, just by what was written on this thread. That definitely would be very very hard to watch, especially for a young child. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Now I have 3 cats (will I ever learn - lol!) and I know that I will again have to face euthanizing one of them, when they get too sick to be helped. Hopefully, they will stay healthy for a long while. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

No matter what pet we have (turtle, dog, cat) we form a very close bond with them. It would be cool to have a turtle as a pet. My mom and I saw a HUGE turtle in the park one day while we were out walking. It was so big that it made me wonder if it was not someone's pet that they let outside because they did not want it anymore. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Childrens' movies show death all the time. Oftentimes onscreen, and sometimes violent. Wouldn't it always be upsetting, especially if the death is a parental figure? -Remember Littlefoot's mom in The Land Before Time? (death from a fight with a T-Rex) -Mufasa in The Lion King? (trampled to death) -Nicodemus in The Secret of NIMH? (CRUSHED! to death) -Charlie dying TWICE in All Dogs Go to Heaven? (the first time being run over by a car, the second a gentler, more ethereal death. But he still dies twice. It should be noted that movie also includes a surprisingly graphic depiction of Hell) -Hazel in Watership Down (old age, but right onscreen and lingered on) Those are just a few, and that doesn't even get into secondary characters' or villains' deaths. I've wondered for a long time why, in kids' and family movies, villains deaths usually happen offscreen, but good guys dying is shown, even lingered on. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"
