I'd love to spend a nice little quality time with someone special, but the problem is, that's not even applicable to me. But seriously, I go for gift certificates. Sports fans can never have enough gear but chances are anything you buy them they will already have or everyone will get the same thing. If you get them a gift certificate (especially one they can use online, which should be all). Any interest themed gift certificate is a great gift.
