The Spirit: Man, this movie sucks Just got back from a screening of this movie, and it's pretty much unwatchable. It's disappointing in a huge way. It's not fun enough to be camp, it's not smart enough to be witty, it's not new or original in any way, and the acting is just god-awful. It's a mess from start to finish.

That sounds about right! wow. it kinda makes me want to see it if it's THAT bad. after all, i AM the person who saw "barb wire" and "glitter" in the theater, just because of my love of truly horrific cinema.

I like horrific cinema too, and that's what made me so mad at this movie. Toward the end, when The Spirit (Gabriel Macht) starts talking to the camera, I thought about how dull the movie was and that I wasn't even enjoying the train wreck of it. It's just bad all around. It doesn't even fall flat in an interesting way.

Okay, but I'd recommend at least seeing it at a matinee so you don't pay full price. Oh, and besides putting him in heavy eye makeup, they also put Samuel L. Jackson in black face at one point, which is weird, to say the least.

"Barb wire" is the best. Its inspired by "casablanca" with Pam Anderson so it was always destined to be brilliant! [Edited 12/17/08 21:13pm]

Barb Wire was inspired by Casablanca? i think the word "inspired" is an exaggeration. it might have been based on casablanca, but that movie was anything but inspired!

It's too bad Will Eisner's legacy has to be fucked with this way. His original comics of The Spirit set the bar for everything that followed. 70s Batman, 80s Daredivil, and 90s Spawn. [Edited 12/20/08 13:22pm] Miller has become some kind of Frankenstein's Monster's turd. He can't write anymore and he can't direct. Sin City was only passable because Rodriguez was there to hold his hand and it introduced a new, interesting look for a film. Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it. |

i was on my way to see this tonight. we got there and i decided to turn around and head home.
i really don't think i could handle another disappointment hand-delivered by Frank Miller himself.

He tries to make that look work again for The Spirit but it doesn't fit as well, and it's definitely not new anymore. About the only thing different here (for Miller) is that one of The Spirit's love interests is a doctor. Usually, a woman has to be a ninja, a stripper, or a whore to be respected in a Frank Miller story.
