Remember Toys?

Just listening to "closing of the year" (which I listen to all year round really), and I remembered I had the film "toys", starring Robin Williams and Michael Gambon, on VHS.

I remembered being very bored by it as a young kid, but now I really appreciate the amazingf set design, costumes and visuals. Its quite surrealist, and Iam sure its inspired by a real artist like Dali etc...(anyone know if this film is based on someones work?)

It has obvious flaws like its s-l-o-w, the story having the depth of a duck tales episode, and rather naive ideas about videogames in general, but I do love the whimsy and strangeness of it all. I love the opening with all the kids and the ending with the toys vs war machines. Its silly but so good to look at.

Heck, even LL Cool J was Ok in it. Better then Robin wright, though to be fair, despite some early scenes, her character gets forgotten about in the second half pretty much.

Williams' usual attempts of comedic scene chewing are rather absent aswell. Not that I mind that, but he is slightly more restrained in this film.

Well, there ain't a film like it, its still a great experience and a great reminder how much better amazing sets are over rather souless CGI/bluescreen.

Well, to be strictly geeky about it, they didn't write anything for it, but did sing the sweet "closing of the year". You actually see Wendy sing it at the beginning of the film. Its a nice way to start a film. Song was written by famous film composer Hans Zimmer (whom I love) and famous music producer Trejor Horn.

The film did nothing for me, but "Closing of the Year" inspired my current sig. Because the actual lyrics of Seal's portion are debatable, I've transcribed one line according to my own sensibilities. cool

πρὸς ὀλίγον ἐστὶ τὸ ζῆν
τὸ τέλος ὁ χρόνος ἀπαιτεῖ.”
