He also asked the shift supervisor if there wasn’t anything productive we could be doing. . OUr shift leader managed to tell him off as respectfully as he could. I was uttterly pissed the rest of the day. I spent that evening thumbing pornos and masturbating.

Yeah, until I was about 8 maybe??? Can't remember the age I found out, but I remember suspecting it was all a big hoax and asking my mom and she admitted he wasn't real. I was heartbroken.

I know people who regift, but I've never done it. Bad taste.

A ton. I learned how to be happy and I learned that I can do that alone.

Dreading the seasonal afffective stressies (not just me, but other people's too), and excited about our yearly holiday house party.

It's more of a traditional thing where I'm concerned. If that comes from some religious origin, then okay. But it's more about family and friends for me.

When I was a kid, my mom took pride in staying up all night on Christmas Eve and turning the living room into a Christmas wonderland. She would decorate packages with elaborate ribbons and decorations, and she'd always have some kind of over-the-top presentation waiting to greet me when I woke up on Christmas morning. One year, yes, I even woke up to find a toy train chugging its way around the tree. It's silly and quaint, but every little boy should have the experience of waking up to a train set on Christmas morning, if only for the memory of it.

I thought my grandpa was Santa Claus because he was fat and jolly and he used to bring us presents in a big trash bag, lol.

I've regifted in that I originally bought something for one person, found out they already had it, then gave the gift to someone else instead. That's not blatant regifting, though, is it?

Yeah, though I'm not sure what. I think a lot of things I was manic about last year I am less manic about this year, though it's difficult to chart those changes because I am of course still manic.

I pledged not to go back to the gym until I started gaining some weight. I overachieved my goals! Now I have to go back to the gym.

1) What is your general mood leading up to this holiday season? I see light at the end of the tunnel. I'm just trying to remain steadfast (with classes, dealing with life's issues, friends' issues, extended family's issues, etc.) until then at least.
2) What are you dreading the most, and excited about the most? I most dread facing impending school deadlines. I'm most excited about a bit of local travel coming up and seeing a few old friends.
3) Do you celebrate the holidays in a secular fashion or religious? For me, it's religious. But in that I appreciate, not resent, the blessing of the holiday becoming a point of cultural unity for even those who don't observe from a faith standpoint. Life -- even that of nonbelievers -- is simply more abundant with points of festival.
4) What was the absolute worst christmas you ever had? I don't recall.
5) What was the best christmas you ever had? I recall none specifically... but there was one Christmas Eve that was perfect: My mother was cooking in the kitchen. The whole house smelled of turkey, cinnamon and clove. I had carols playing. Every candle in the house was lit, and I was lying with a cup of warm milk, some candy canes and my cat at the foot of the lit Christmas tree. I was in complete awe of the beauty and tranquility of the night.
6) Did you ever believe in Santa Clause? If you did, when did you ‘find out’. I believed in Santa until roughly age 5. No one "told me"; I just sort of lost confidence in the notion. I even was interviewed on a local p.m. news show, saying how I didn't believe. I was with my father at the mall, and a reporter asked to interview me. He allowed it, but he later told me he hoped my mother wouldn't see the broadcast. She sort of enjoyed wielding the holiday mystique on us kids.
7) Have you ever re-gifted anything? Or knew someone personally who re-gifted? I do it all the time. I don't really like gifts, unless I specifically ask for something.

9) As you look back on this year, did you learn anything new about yourself? Yes. I overestimate myself significantly. I need to take on the future with more sobriety about my capabilities.
10) Did you set any goals for yourself this year? And if so, how are you doing? I've met a couple goals, like paying down some debt and simply enjoying mundane things a bit more. But I haven't met others, like hitting a gym, seizing more meditative time or finding a charity to which I might devote myself.
11) Did you donate anything to a charity this year? Yes... lots of clothing and a bit of money. But I'd like to take up something more hands-on in 2009.

13) What’s the best present you’ve ever given? In a Secret Santa exchange here, I gave Madartista a deck of 24-carat-gold-lined Salvador Dali-designed tarot cards that I once found in Paris. And I wrote a nice little note explaining the history behind the cards and a bit about me. That present stands out as a particularly self-emptying one. It felt nice being able to 1) give something of personal meaning to me that I didn't just cop at a mall; and 2) give to someone I knew almost nothing about, but whose sensibilities I actively had to learn and appreciate in a short span to offer something he'd enjoy.

15) In general, do you think the holidays make people happier or more miserable? Unfortunately, I'd guess the holiday as it currently exists makes the greatest number relatively more miserable. But it doesn't have to remain this way.
16) Have you ever heard a live carol or choir during Christmas? Yes - at churches, in parks, at public marketplaces, etc. Here in Toronto, many of my classmates actually do old-school door-to-door caroling. It's the coolest thing ever!
17) Do you celebrate any other occasions during this holiday season? I do Christmas, Kwanzaa, the birthday of my wife's brother and parents (all in late December) and New Year's Day, which marks my wedding anniversary.
