Used to love him. Specifically as Gator in 'Jungle Fever', Jules in 'Pulp Fiction' and Ordell in 'Jackie Brown'. But of late.... ehhhh. Jackson's been around for a long time, definitely a guy who's paid his dues. I just got a sense of once his star arrived, he became less discriminating about the roles he was taking. Perhaps trying to make up for the money he missed out on all those years. But, he will hit the mark here and there. I enjoyed him in 'Eve's Bayou', 'A Time To Kill', and 'Unbreakable'. But since he does about 5 or 6 movies a year, there's bound to be a fair amount of drivel in there.

I agree but you also have to remember that most black actors don't get the best movie roles and a brutha got bills to pay. He's lucky to be working at all. shrug

I understand that. I also understand that Samuel Jackson has more clout than the a lot of black actors. Not that that puts him in the drivers' seat per se, but it gives him less of an excuse than some others.

What makes you think he has ANY clout in Hollywood? Just because he's known doesn't mean he has any real power. Just look at the material he chooses. That alone tells me that he's taking any and everything that comes his way. Even if the material sucks he's still fun to watch tho.

The same things that tend to equal clout with any other actor. Academy and Golden Globe-award nominated, highest grossing movie star of all-time. It could be that he has absolutely NO clout in Hollywood, but I'd doubt it.

But I do agree, he's got the chops. There's no question about that. I just wish he'd a little choosy about the roles. That's all.

He just always seems the same to me. shrug In American Gangster and Training Day, he was the same guy. Fallen, Richochet, and Deja Vu--same cop. To me, he just acts like he acts in RL. Not saying he's not good...just that I'd like to see him play something really off the wall, like an evil priest or a child molester. lol

razz Denzel has played a cop/detective/investigator-type more than a handful of times.

My :same: list...

The Bone Collector--same cop only bedridden.
Training Day--same cop only crooked.
Out of Time--same cop.
Inside Man--same cop
The Seige--same cop.
Fallen--same cop.
Richochet--same cop.

I'll give him The Great Debaters, Malcolm X, and The Hurricane as "different"roles, (of what I can remember) but mostly he plays some type of investigator/cop/soldier. Time to break out again, Denzel! Play a serial killer or a madman. A gay man or a cowboy.

At least Sam has played a homeless man, a crazy, evil superhero, a hitman, a scientist, and a host of other "different" roles.

Hollywood toasts Samuel L. Jackson's career

Updated 12/2/2008 10:12 AM

"He isn't afraid to go and work. He does a lot of things and gets a chance to do very different roles and he enjoys it," Star Wars director George Lucas said of American Cinematheque honoree Samuel L. Jackson.

By Kelley L. Carter, USA TODAY

LOS ANGELES — Friends, co-stars and past directors toasted Samuel L. Jackson at the 23rd annual American Cinematheque Award Ceremony Monday night.
George Lopez, Sharon Stone, Vin Diesel, Andy Garcia, Denzel Washington, Justin Timberlake, Kerry Washington, George Lucas and Magic Johnson celebrated and roasted the star at a dinner at the Beverly Hilton. The event will air Dec. 9 at 10 pm ET/PT on AMC.

On the red carpet before the event, Jackson reminisced about his 20-year career, trying to come up with standout moments.

"You know, finally reaching a point where I didn't audition anymore, and I had people that were asking for my services were amazing to me," he said, cupping an arm around wife LaTanya Richardson. "I realized that I had a different kind of responsibility. And that responsibility was to find stories and characters and work that kept people engaged."

Others sang his praises, and tried to put into words what made Jackson, well, Jackson.

"If I could define it, I'd be rich, you know what I mean?" said Lakeview Terrace co-star Kerry Washington, who wore a Missoni pant suit and sparkled in Nathan Lane jewels. "The man is coolness personified. And I love him and I'm grateful to him for all that he's created in his career and his life."

Lucas, who directed Jackson in the Star Wars prequels, said Jackson impressed him with a strong work ethic.

"He isn't afraid to go and work. He does a lot of things and gets a chance to do very different roles and he enjoys it," Lucas said. "He's a dream to work with; he's real easygoing. He really tried to contribute as much as he could to make the character all it can be."

John Singleton, who directed Jackson in Shaft, says that he's the consummate actor.

"He's a badass. He's the badass. He's just really smooth … and whatever role he does, he throws his all into it."

His neighbor, Johnson, says the best thing about his card-playing buddy is that in spite of his successes — which include an Academy Award nomination for his role in Pulp Fiction— he has remained unchanged.

"Sam is an original. He stays the same. He doesn't change for nobody. He's a guy who demands respect and he breeds class. And he's always stayed humbled all at the same time," Johnson said. "And I think that he's a guy who understands how to balance stardom with just his family life, being a husband, being a father and also being an avid golfer. He's a master at understanding his strength and he plays to that."

So is there a role out there that Jackson would love to tackle?

"I'm still looking for this great Western to do just because I grew up watching them."

And when such a role materializes, will he wear a 10-gallon hat?

"Hmm. Maybe 5."
