I usually like to stay in. in the past I would go out with my ex-husband if he had a gig out of town, or stay in, be it at a friend's place or my own. The problem with New Years here is that for one night the entire COUNTRY loses it's mind. People literally start setting off fireworks as soon as the sun sets. Grown ass men who you normally see in suits from Saville Row are literally running around town with open champagne bottles, the rock &roll kids with endless bottles of beer. By the time the going out hour is among us, it's complete MAYHEM. Just screaming and dancing in the streets, no taxis to be found anywhere, subways overloaded, all these crazy looking people with party hats and carnival masks, pickpockets in the red district, it's insanity. Then the entire city lights up at midnight with full scale fireworks, for about a half hour. Absoloutely GORGEOUS to look at, but to actually be outside IN IT is terrifying....too many cherry bombs and all the debris comes falling down around your head
The next day is always funny to see, though. I live in one of the greenest, cleanest cities, but New Year's Day always looks like a war zone with magnum champagne bottles lying EVERYWHERE! | |
