The Day The Earth Stood Still - OH LAWD, Bad Review

http://www.cnn.com/2008/S...index.html

I'm supposed to see it this weekend.

Now I'm dreading it. I mean, they chose Keanu Reeves for the role of Klaato, which would normally make the movie a must miss, but his icy, cold, and almost desperate 'Kevin Costneresque' (Yes, I'm trying to coin a transient noun as a new phrase) underacting should actually work with this character.

Apparently, the critic didn't like the plot holes, and idiosyncrasies.

I still have hope.

Normally I see any movie with Jennifer Connolly in it but the bad reviews and the promise that you'll have to sit through 2 hours of Keanu Reeves makes it just too much to bear.....I think I'll pass on this one!

We just got back from watching it.

Well. What can I say.

It's a bad movie, with good parts. It's also a movie with a definate agenda (think The Abyss and the whole 'humans are destroying themselves' theme. Or even I, Robot).

The actors in this movie seem to just be reciting lines. The dialogue could have been written by George Lucas.

But I have to say, Keanu Reeves has never looked better. He's not the type of guy I'd find attractive, but with a bit of age on him now, he wears it beautifully. I wanted to turn him over on his stomach and have and alien invasion of my own if you know what I mean.

SPOILER ALERT - DO NOT READ BELOW UNLESS YOU WANT A FEW DETAILS

The special effects range from good to standard, though I dissagree with the critics that they're over the top. They're woven into the movie here and there, but they seem almost casually incidental--the real star of this movie is the movie's theme --we're a destructive race, but we have a kinder, gentler side worth saving and exploring. The theme is , as in all movies, ubiquitous, but in this movie, the writer/director team doesn't even bother to cover it up with a thin veneer of abstraction. Hell, within the first 30 minutes, you're treated to the line "If we stay. the. course...." lol

CONCLUSION:
I liked the movie enough. It's not a movie that's going to win any awards. And it isn't the marvelous update ala Steven Spielberg of "War of the Worlds", but I've seen far worse end-of-world movies.

It doesn't really even make a good chick flick honestly.

The female character doesn't actually feel anything for the Alien in a romantic sense.

The put the little child in the movie probably to 'soften' the movie up, but at it's heart it's a Sci-Fi flick.

I really hope this is worth the wait.

As for "The Day the Earth Stood Still", a friend of mine wanted to go to it tonight but my evening is going to be too busy to go so I had to turn him down. Maybe this is a good thing.

Though I try not to listen to critics,
my experience has shown me that with that much bad word of mouth,
it's usually true.

They took the same formula (for the most part) of War of the Worlds.
It was focused on a few select "personal" relationships, instead of a mass "end of the world" theme.
But even then it wasn't as focused, and you just couldn't bring yourself to care about the characters.

The theme is played out too. I did like the casual use of special effects from time to time. Where the effect is there, but it doesn't get in the way of the story. In this case, even that was muddled. The movie vasiclates between tryin to be the intimate story that War of the Worlds told, and to being a full on disaster movie.

Dan is short for Daniel.

Derived from Hebrew for "One who is judged by God"

That's hilarious neutral
