I recieved a mail in my hotmail account from what seemed to be the hotmail people.
They asked for my details, including my password for the account.
They said they wanted to verify that the account was in use and if I didn´t answer within 2 weeks the account would be deleted.
So I sent in what they asked for and now I can´t access my account - my password isn´t recognised


Has anyone had this trouble before?
I know it seems dumb to hand over my password like that but I was very tired at the time and I thought if it was spam it wouldn´t have got passed the filter.

hotmail already know your password, I don't think they'd need you to email it to them

Yea, and I would be worried about more than just your e-mail account. Companies will NEVER ask for passwords in an unencrypted e-mail. I would operate and take steps as if an identity theft were afoot.

That's simply my opinion and in no way is any prescribed course of action. Just something to think about.

Did you set up any security questions to recover the password?

Describe to them exactly what happened. Maybe they can help...

But even if you do recover your email, be vigilant and aware that someone may have obtained sensitive information from your email... if there's anything in there like credit card numbers or anything... then at the very least check your accounts to make sure nobody is using your credit card number...

Like ZombieKitten said, Hotmail already KNOWS your password. In fact, they actually mail it to YOU at an alternate account in case you ever forget it, and they ask you the answers to a few security questions to verify that you are the real person requesting the information.

There are scams out these - how serious this is depends on whether that was your main email account. I've heard of cases where all the contacts were mailed requesting money to be wired as the 'sender' was stuck in an airport in some dodgy part of the world.

If you have another email account, mail everyone that might be on the other one too, tell them you've been scammed and to contact you if they get any strange emails.

my yahoo was hacked a year ago
everyone I knew got an email from me asking them to buy electrical goods
I changed the password, hasn't happened again since. That one isn't my main email any more.

I hate when that happens.

And I´ve had to sort out some other sites that used the hotmail address as a back up.
