Mother waters down baby formula, baby almost dies..

http://www.insideedition....oryID=2398

I was watching Inside Edition last night, and I heard this story about a Mom trying to save on the cost of baby formula, and she would dilute the formula with extra water..and almost killed the baby! Please, pass this on if you know someone who does this. sad

From Inside Edition website:

Jeri Moss believed she could save a few dollars by making her son's baby formula go further by watering it down. However, the money-saving measure almost cost her adorable baby his life.

Moss never even dreamed she was putting her beloved child at risk.

But the young mother of two learned a little known medical fact the hard way. Too much water can be dangerous for an infant by causing sodium levels in the blood to drop.

Moss's five-month-old son La'damian had a seizure and stopped breathing as a result. He was rushed to the hospital near his home in Tampa, Florida.

The distraught mother told doctors she put two scoops of formula in ten ounces of water. Experts say she should have used more than twice that amount of formula.

Dr. James Orlowski is Chief of Pediatrics at University Community Hospital in Tampa, where the infant was treated. He told INSIDE EDITION, "It seems that every time the economy goes sour one of the things that people do is try to stretch out the formula."

He continued, talking about how he treated Moss's infant son. "We gave the baby concentrate electrolytes solution to bring the sodium up enough to stop the baby from seizing."

La'damian is now out of the hospital and recovering back home with his relieved mom.

Health authorities are warning other hard-up parents: don't be tempted to water down your little one's baby formula.

It's not just expensive--it's not good for Children. Sure, it keeps them alive, but they really need breast milk.

Breast feed...?

I know some people just can't but most of us can easily, some just choose not to. I don't get it.

I want to know why she is not getting WIC if she is having that much trouble buying formula.

WIC is a education/nutrition program for low income women. They get FREE formula, cereal, peanut butter, milk and cheese for themselves while they are pregnant and breast feeding and for their children up to 5 years old unless they have specific health issues or are special needs then they can get it for a few years past the age of 5.

WIC was a life saver for me with my kids.

eek

There was a case where a girl died by drinking too much water for a radio contest. Until then I had no idea you could literally drown your body by drinking too much water. That's crazy.

That would be my solution but who am I to judge her when I do not know her situation. I do not have kids of my own so I try not to tell ppl what to do with their kids. Looking at her, doesn't look like there is much of her.
I have seen the price of formula at the store and I was shocked considering how much diapers cost.

Breast feeding is always best but I have known some ppl who could not do it for various reasons.

It never occurred to me that too much water could be a bad thing.

my sister couldn't with her first and only baby. It was in there but no matter how much she tried it wouldn't come out.

my surprise is over the fact that she 'never dreamed' that feeding her baby watered down formula might not be healthy. i'm sorry but, duh

Yeah, something about diluting the amount of sodium and potassium in your blood can kill you quickly. That's why if you sweat a lot during workouts you should drink something that replaces your electrolytes not just plain water.

mmmm..... I guess it depends how much she watered it down. Maybe it wasn't that watered down or maybe she thought there was enough. Being poor will cause people to try and cut corners any way they can. There needs to be an educational campaign on this simply because we need water so it doesn't seem like it would be a bad thing to have too much of it. But I see what you're saying.

i agree she needs parenting classes. basic nutrition for starters would not hurt at all. not at all
