It all depends (usually) on what you're serving. If dinners are $100 dollars a person, you should routinely see some big tips. The dud that tipped me was at the bar. He had a $40 dollar bottle of wine.

That I've left? I left $1000 on a $4000 tab. As a percentage that's only 25% though. I routinely tip 30% or more for dinner if the service is good.

I used to hang out with some older gay dudes, and every Tuesday they'd go to a really swanky hotel bar and rack up a thousand dollar tab and they'd kick the waitress about $500 EVERY week.

the largest tip I left was 40.00 (percentage wise), he was a sweet guy and gave me excellent service, it was a shark dinner and it was delish!!! I was the only customer in the restaurant (it was a new joint, a Thai which won rave reviews from Boston Mag. years running) My meal and drink came up almost 40.00.

The largest tip I ever received was 200.00...
