The one thing in Ren's favor regarding the tipping issue is that he mentioned the waiter was also the owner.

At my regular sushi bar, if the owner waits on me, he won't accept a tip because I just made a profit for him. I still slip a $10 or $20 to the sushi chef when he's not looking though.

If it was the owner, the argument of low wages for servers is moot. I would have still tipped though.

You have to realize that people in this business count on tips for money...they get a low hourly wage. If your funds are low then don't go out to eat. I know it's harsh but it is what it is.

lol Ok, but you just can't tell people "not" to go out and eat just because they're low on funds. That's their right to do that. And it works both ways, no one forced people to be waiters/waitresses. They know what comes with the job, and getting stiffed for tips is one of them.

Oh please! Don't give me that! If you have a sit down breakfast/lunch/dinner then expect to tip unless your waiter or food is horrible. There are plenty of places where you can go out to eat....you pick up your food and go somewhere else to eat it!

You're dictating what people can and can't do yet you're insulting people that tip you?

I'd make sure everyone in that bar knew not to tip you ever again if that shit was pulled on me and I ALWAYS tip. Usually 30%

I don't understand why this is such a touchy subject.

What is so hard, and better yet what is so WRONG about tipping the waiter for their service? It's standard in the US and anyone living here knows when they sit down to eat they tip. If you can't afford it then don't go out! It's really simple people!

This guy had an $80 round, honey. He demanded my attention when I was serving someone else and the continued to order drinks for all his friends coming up to the bar when he was ready to cash out. Normally I don't get customers like this.

Also when I have tipping customers all night I throw in a comp drink or tell them not to worry about tipping me at all for that last round. I am very polite and a fun bartender.

Thank you very much! lol

Well it's rude not to tip when you get the service you want and expect.

We will have to agree to disagree. I could never walk into a place, sit down to eat and say "I just don't feel like tipping the waiter today".

In Ren's case I think the owner overreacted....especially with him being a regular. Banning him from the establishment is only hurting his business more.

I know, I should have. shrug

There are instances where it's not an issue. What it comes down to, for me, is if you go out you should know to tip. I never take tips from friends and will even buy them a drink for coming out...I'm not a TOTAL douchebag.

Just sometimes.

I feel and I understand your point. And we do agree that the owner overreacted. Had the owner been me, I just would've thought he didn't have the money, or he forgot to tip, or he didn't like the service, I certainly wouldn't have gone after Ren. Now, had Ren done it a 2nd time, THEN I may just ask him the next time he came in and it would be "Is our service not up to par anymore?" and then see how the conversation goes. Because the bottomline is, he's still bringing in money to my establishment.

Exactamundo.

I'm not telling people how to spend their money or where to go to buy food. I'm asking to have common courtesy because let's face it, these servers are counting on this money to pay their bills and feed their families. If you're planning a night out on the town and go to these establishments you should factor in tipping.

Aaaaannnnd I'm out!....right after this edit:

When you're an owner of the place you have no say!

Ok now I'm really out...

The lack of a tip didn't deter me.... lol

...but now, my wife gets on me because she thinks I tip too much...
