No you don't. If a person chooses not to tip, that's their right to not to. It's not etched in stone.

I say to hell with this douchebag.

#1 A tip is optional and I've lived on my tips. It wasn't like you planned it, it was an over-sight and you probably would have given him double the next time since you go twice a month,,,

#2 Ban me? Oh, you want to go there over three bucks? I will fuck with you everyday of the week just out of spite. I'll report you to the health department every quarter and I'll be ordering take out and not picking it up from everyone's phone I know.

#3 Spread the word? Try spray paint on the the front door in red letters.

When I'm fucked with for no apparent reason I either make an effort to ignore it completely or #2 and #3 with a number four will come out of me.

I'm totally with Ren on this one.. Tipping is not mandatory, if for whatever reason you decide not to tip that is the choice of the customer.. To be accosted by the waiter/manager afterwards is deplorable if he were a member of my staff he would be out on his ass quicker than he could say where's my tip!

many years ago i took my then hubby out to dinner for his birthday
the waitress spent her time sucking up to him and rolling her eyes at me whenever i asked for something rolleyes i ordered something i had had before with a few (easy) changes, and he ordered what ever it was, and she asked him if there were any special requests or something...he said nope..she looked straight at me and said 'oh you're gonna make it easy for me, aren't you?'...all i asked for was a med well steak, and for the sauce to be left off the veggies...point is, the look on her face when she realized who would be paying for the dinner(and the tip)was priceless...and i still remember it...i left her 50 cents lol

sometimes you do,sometimes you don't..shrug

my husband and i went out to dinner with my parents (my parents were paying, not us), and the service was REALLY BAD, so my mom decided to leave 2 cents on the table. well that pissed the waitress off, she came behind my husband outside into the parking lot and started throwing the dishes from the table at him. eek

The key is that he recognized you as a regular customer...he should have realized that this is not common practice from you. Even after you explained your situation, he still carried on...

Wrong on his part, all the way...

Now, I wouldn't go to that restaurant ever again, just because he does know your face and you may end up eating something similar to cat in your next dish.

This sucks dude...
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I worked in a salon, lived off of tips, and I made it my business to KNOW my customers. If they didn't tip me one time, then usually they would drop a large tip when they could and I would make out better in the end. I had a repeat customer, and tipping is a way of saying THANK YOU and not obligatory.

You do not have to tip, and what the waiter did was straight tacky!

he lost a customer over a few bucks? Stupid. Why try to nickel and dime your customer like that? TACKY! I am sure Ren wouldda hooked him up the next time.

Word of mouth travels fast, when its negative.... tell everyone what he did...

I always tip, even if the service sucks, because I know that the staff works for peanuts....but my tips reflect the service....and no, I don't expect a dog and pony show to give a tip, but if you suck, the tip reflects that...HOWEVER...I have yet to see where it is written or etched in stone that a.) I HAVE TO give a tip...and b.) that if times are a bit tight, then I shouldn't go out to eat if thats what I want to do...that is BULLSHIT!! I tip out of gratitude, not out of obligation...After Ren explained the situation (which he TOTALLY didn't have to do), the dude should've rolled with it and let it go....

...I wish like hell someone would trail me to a parking lot asking for a tip...the first thing I'd say after giving them a strong finger would be "WATCH THIS"...then punch...then another finger just to make sure they got my meaning clearly....the nerve of some motherf**kers!!!
He was like a cock who thought the sun had risen to hear him crow.

Fuck that. Never. I tip on I want to tip. If the service was great, then I will exceed the tip scale, if it sucked, then I will adjust it below. Amd if it was downright horrible, then they gets nothing!

I think it's a case of 2 wrongs.
Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it.

Have you ever had to live on tips?

Minimum wage is less than $6 an hour in the US and it is both legal and common practice to pay servers even less than that. Tips are how servers earn any kind of livable wage.
Did the guy handle it appropriately? Hell no.
Was his anger justified? Yeah, I can see it. I’d be pissed too if I did everything right and didn’t get a tip.

nod In Texas, waitstaff make HALF of minimum wage. So, tips ARE your income. I woulda been mad too BUT I would never have said anything. Renny, if it was me and this is a regular place I eat at and I unexpectedly found myself short, I woulda told the guy and said, I'll catch you next time. I had some of my regular customers tell me that when I was a waitress and they always made good. But, yeah, dude was outta line. Sorry he was so confrontational. hug

seriously times are tough and waiters depend on their tips. If the service was good I think they deserve a tip. If I were in your shoes I'd get money from somewhere and go back and tip him even if he never let's you back in.

It would never cross my mind to do this. Ban my ass, my wallets banned from YOU! lol

Whoa!

That was DEF tacky falloff

What happend to the days when waiters get cranky if you showed up the next time and didn't previously tip them? lol

Thing is, tip should NOT be an obligation to begin with,,,,,it should be a common courtesy.

Here you have the WHOLE bill and you ban somebody for some measly ass tip? Good look keeping that job lol

You have to realize that people in this business count on tips for money...they get a low hourly wage. If your funds are low then don't go out to eat. I know it's harsh but it is what it is.

lol

Last week while working the bar some guy left me nickles and dimes...I laughed in his face and flicked all of the change right back at him and said no thanks!

Pre-game at home and/or bring a flask if you can't afford to tip. I don't even get an hourly at the bar...it's all tips I count on.

lol Ok, but you just can't tell people "not" to go out and eat just because they're low on funds. That's their right to do that. And it works both ways, no one forced people to be waiters/waitresses. They know what comes with the job, and getting stiffed for tips is one of them.
