Wal-Mart Worker Dies After Shopper Stampede, NY Daily News Says

By Stefanie Batcholino

Nov. 28 (Bloomberg) -- A Wal-Mart Stores Inc. worker died after hundreds of customers jammed into a Long Island, New York, store, knocking down the man and stepping on him shortly after doors opened early, the New York Daily News said, citing a witness.

A woman also miscarried as hundreds of shoppers rushed through the doors, which were taken off their hinges to accomodate the surging crowd, the newspaper reported, citing another witness. Nassau County police said there were several injuries without elaborating, and wouldn't confirm witness accounts, the New York Daily News said.

I've never done this "Black Friday" shopping nonsense, but this morning my wife woke me up at 4:30AM to go to Toys 'R' Us for a Barbie thing that (while not on sale) is a limited supply item AND the only thing my daughter asked Santa for.

omg
I could not believe the MADNESS!!!!
We got the a little before 5:00AM, and there was a line of people snaking around the block!
I thought to myself; "what the hell are they giving away"?????
Truth be told, out of all the things that we bought, only ONE was a "doorbuster" special (50% off only this morning). Everything else was regular stuff. The Barbie thing was worth it ONLY because they only had 2 left when I got there, and even so I only really saved myself the $6 in shipping costs had I been forced to order it on-line.

I will never, ever do that nonsense again.
Waking up that damned early, waiting on line in the cold to get in, and dealing the MOB inside the store (yelling & pushing) just wasn't worth it.

The Wal-Mart death is a sad testament to the ignorance & pack mentality of people.

I agree. I hate the mentality and I have never once shopped the day after Thanksgiving. It's insane.

Wal-Mart Employee Trampled to Death by Customers By JACK HEALY and ANGELA MACROPOULOS

A Wal-Mart employee in suburban New York was trampled to death by a crush of shoppers who tore down the front doors and thronged into the store early Friday morning, turning the annual rite of post-Thanksgiving bargain hunting into a Hobbesian frenzy.

At 4:55 a.m., just five minutes before the doors were set to open, a crowd of 2,000 anxious shoppers started pushing, shoving and piling against the locked sliding glass doors of the Wal-Mart in Valley Stream, N.Y., Nassau County police said. The shoppers broke the doors off their hinges and surged in, toppling a 34-year-old temporary employee who had been waiting with other workers in the store’s entryway.

People did not stop to help the employee as he lay on the ground, and they pushed against other Wal-Mart workers who were trying to aid the man. The crowd kept running into the store even after the police arrived, jostling and pushing officers who were trying to perform CPR, the police said.

“They were like a stampede,” said Nassau Det. Lt. Michael Fleming. “Hundreds of people walked past him, over him or around him.”

The employee, who was not identified, was taken from the Wal-Mart to nearby Franklin Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:03 a.m., the police said. His exact cause of death has not been determined. The police said that three other shoppers were injured and a 28-year-old woman who was eight months pregnant was taken to the hospital for observation.

One shopper, Kimberly Cribbs, said she was standing near the back of the crowd at around 5 a.m. on Friday when people started rushing into the store. She said several people were knocked to the ground, and parents had to grab their children by the hand to keep them from being caught in the crush.

“They were falling all over each other,” she said. “It was terrible.”

Crowds began building outside the Wal-Mart at 9 p.m. Thursday and grew throughout the night, as eager shoppers queued up in a line that filled the sidewalk and stretched toward the boundary fence of the Green Acres Mall.

At 3:30 a.m., store employees called the Nassau police to report that the crowd was growing quickly, the police said. Officers came by to try to organize the line, but were called away to a Circuit City, a Best Buy and a B.J.’s Wholesale Club nearby, to deal with crowds there.

A half-dozen Wal-Mart employees lined up in the entryway trying to hold back the crowd by pushing against the locked sliding doors, but they were overwhelmed by the force of the crowd, Lieutenant Fleming said.

As the doors snapped open and people streamed in, several people fell on top of one another. The 34-year-old employee who died was at the bottom of the pile, the police said.

On Friday, Wal-Mart released a statement saying that the man who was killed had been working for Wal-Mart through a temp agency. The company called the death “a tragic situation,” and said it was working with police.

“The safety and security of our customers and associates is our top priority,” Wal-Mart said in a statement.

Lieutenant Fleming said that the store “could have done more” to prevent the melee.

“I’ve heard other people call this an accident, but it’s not,” he said. “This certainly was foreseeable.”

This is exactly the reason Black Friday is NOT on this sista's schedule. I tell you what--it never will be. There is no material bargain in this life that is going to make me camp out, rush in, and potentially endanger the lives of fellow consumers or employees trying to make a dollar for the sake of living. I personally would feel like sh*t for the rest of my life knowing that my hunger for a so-called "great price" took the life of the unborn and another life of someone else. This is madness! Were people THAT afraid these items were going to fly away that they had to trample/crash/rush the store until the doors came off? I guess so. I personally thought peep's money was too tight for even the nuttiest of shopping rituals. I guess not.
I think this is why my dad changed his mind about getting up early and THANK GOD. I was content enough (and saddened) to hear the small little Chi-town stories of the traffic jams and the parking lot fiascoes. I think somebody got injured here too. I hate to say this about fellow humans and Americans but...starving animals do crap like that. Trampling others, losing their minds to get to something. That's the kind of frenzy you see on the farm. Human beings shouldn't be going that crazy for items that they can have with them for only so long.

What a world we live in....

disbelief This is some ridiculous shit. Even more reason to shop online. I went to NM this afternoon and although it was crowded I was able to get in and out. I've done this early morning crap ONCE and after I figured out it was about some bait and switch bullshit, I've never done it again. hmph! I'd much rather get up early to shop the day after Xmas cuzt that's when you get the really good bargains, especially on seasonal stuff. But standing in line at 5 am and bustin' the doors down is some dumb shit. Those people should be ashamed of themselves cuz it's REALLY not that serious. sad

This underscores how stupid it is to set people up for the materialistic orgy that is Black Friday.

But it's even more stupid that people actually embrace the obsession -- camping up at 3 a.m. , sleeping in tents outside stores. Deranged.

Of course it's that serious!
Remember after the catastrophe of 9/11, what did the President say do?
Go shopping!

It ritualistic Americana. It's another holiday 'tradition' like drunk driving, discharging firearms and family brawls ending up with someone dead and someone else drunk and in jail.

Happy Holidays!

It's an appalling example of programmed, mindless, obscene greed and consumerism. Next year the same pathetic mofos will do it all over again...not even realizing what they're allowing themselves to be turned into.

They're like rats on the fear and consume treadmill. It's effin' sickening and disgusting.
